Rhoda Smith was born in August 1784 at Heckfield, Hampshire, England.1 She was the daughter of John Smith and Sarah Cooper.1 Rhoda Smith was baptized on 29 August 1784 at Heckfield, Hampshire, England; Her name was listed as Rhodah Smith.1,2 She married James Munday on 1 May 1815 at Heckfield, Hampshire, England; James Monday, bachelor, and Rhoda Smith, spinster, both of this place.1 Rhoda Smith died on 29 March 1862 at Stanley, Yorks, England, at age 77; Rhoda died at the Lunatic Asylum in Stanley of "senile decay". She was listed as aged 76 years and a housewife from Lockwood.
The asylum was opened in 1818 with William Ellis as Director, where he considered the patients to be "little different to beasts".3,4,5
She was buried on 3 April 1862 at Holbeck Cemetery, Holbeck, Yorks, England; Eve Tidswell of the Friends of Holbeck Cemetery sent this writer three photos of the gravestone marker for James and Rhoda Munday.6,4
She and James Munday appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 8 Front Row, Leeds (Southern), Yorks, England; James Munday and family were living at 8 Front Row, in the southern area of Leeds. At this time, just daughter Margaret aged 28, dressmaker, born Hunslet, was living with James aged 62 [b. c1790] and Rhoda, aged 64 [b. c1788]. James was born Reading, Berkshire and Rhoda born Eckfield [sic], Hampshire.7,8 Rhoda Smith and James Munday appeared on the census of 1861 at 8 Front Row, Leeds, Yorks, England; James Munday, 74, sailcloth weaver, Rhoda, 75 and Mary A., 38, milliner. James was b. Berks, Reading, Rhoda in Hampshire, and Mary A., in Leeds.9
