Josiah Yarnes was born circa 1760 at Dutchess Co, New York; NAC (MG 11, WO 28/10), Page 143. Film #B2867. He was the son of Thomas Yarnes (Herns) and Deborah (?). Josiah Yarnes married Jenny Bartley; Michael Duffy, e-mail dated 30 June 2000 [mwduffy@istar. ca]. Josiah Yarnes died after 1820 at Ontario.
Michael Duffy at [email protected] located a petition with a copy of his discharge papers from the King's Rangers commanded by Major James Rogers. He was a Private within the Company of Captain Henry Ruiter. This document indicated he was discharged at age 22 in 1783, after serving three years, and that he was born in the parish of Phillips Patent in Dutchess County, NY. He had been a member of that company for three years.
A later document, dated 4 October 1797 at Kingston Ontario, tells of two children born before 1789. At the bottom was a note that Sarah, daughter of Josiah and Jenny Yerns was baptised 14 Jan 1786 [Upper Land Petitions "H" Bundle 3, 1797 (RG 1 L 3, Vol 224), p132].
Later documentation, dated 24 Feb 1810, states that Josiah found a mistake had been made, and his name had been entered on the United Empire List as Isaiah, rather than Josiah, and wished to have that corrected. On all three of the above documents, his name was written as Harnes.
