Rachel Campbell Kerr Howard was born on 18 October 1836 at St Martins, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of John Howard Jr and Rachel Campbell Kerr. Rachel Campbell Kerr Howard married William Gillies Patterson, son of Nicholas Perdue Patterson and Catherine Nelson Copeland, on 9 May 1869 at St Andrew's Church, Saint John, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; William G. Patterson, Esq., was of Pictou, Nova Scotia.1 Rachel Campbell Kerr Howard died on 1 January 1923 at Vineland, Cumberland Co, New Jersey, at age 86; In Memoriam Mrs. WG Patterson. Atmore, Ala. Jan 6.- Notice has been received here of the death at Vineland NJ on Jan 1 of the widow of William Gillies Patterson. Her decease means the severing of another link with the early history of our country, her father having been born in 1792, and both her grandfathers, Capt John Howard and Col James Kerr, having been officers in the Revolutionary War, and pioneer settlers of New Brunswick.
As the wife of a Baptist minister, she had hosts of friends in many cities in all parts of the country to whom she had endeared herself by her sweet Christian character. She is known in many places in the Lake region of Florida where her husband held pastorate some years ago. She is survived by the following children: HH Paterson, Atmore AL; WM Patterson, Springfield MO; Mrs Grace Cornatzer, Vineland, NJ; and Jennings Patteson of Haynesville LA. Interment will take place at Vineland NJ on Thursday afternoon, Jan 4.2 She was buried on 4 January 1923 at Siloam Cemetery, Vineland, Cumberland Co, New Jersey.2,3
She and William Gillies Patterson appeared on the census of 11 June 1900 at Vinita, Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma; W.G. Patterson, 57, Rachel C.K., 63, Gracie M., 22; W.M., 22. The family had come to the US in 1877/ William was a minister, and Gracie was an art teacher. Rachel had eight children, with only six living.4
