John Wood Benjamin was born on 18 September 1842 at Gardner's Creek, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.1 He was the son of William Henry Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Wood. John Wood Benjamin has also be reported to have been born 15 October 1847 New Brunswick.2 He married Samantha Horner on 28 May 1872 at Cambridge, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; The marriage certificate listed Samantha as age 24, born Granby, daughter of James and Mary Ann. John was age 29, born Saint John.3,4 John Wood Benjamin died on 5 April 1926 at Granby, Shefford Co, Quebec, at age 83.1,5
He was buried at Pinewood Cemetery, Granby, Shefford Co, Quebec.1,5
According to Jennie Rodgers Thompson (d/o Theresa Benjamin), John Benjamin was the eldest and went off to Granby, Quebec. A quick check in that area found his family living in Brome in 1881. The 1901 census finds him in Granby, so her memory was very good.6 He appeared on the census of 1881 at Brome, Brome Co, Quebec; John Benjamin was 38, b. New Brunswick and a miller; wife Samantha was 34, b. QC. Daughter Mary was aged 8, b. US and daughter Caroline E. was 2 mos old, born Feb. They were Methodist.7 He appeared on the census of 28 April 1891 at Brome, Brome Co, Quebec; John Benjamin, 48, Samantha, 44, Mary, 18, Carrie, 10, and ? (male) 1 mos, all Methodists.8 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Granby Village, Shefford Co, Quebec; John Bengamen, 47, Samantha, 40, and son Gordon, 10. Also with them were daughter Carrie Conoly, 21, Robert Conoly, 30, and two other lodgers.2 He appeared on the census of 1911 at Granby, Shefford Co, Quebec; John Benjamin, 66, Methodist, carpenter, Samantha, 63, Arthur, 20, and three boarders.9
