Asa Holgate was born in May 1767. He was the son of Asa Holgate and Martha Kathan. Asa Holgate married Jane Scott, daughter of Walter Scott and Mary (?), circa 1788.1 Asa Holgate died on 5 May 1799 at Vermont. He was buried at Church Street Cemetery, Swanton, Franklin Co, Vermont.2 His estate was probated on 18 May 1799 at St Albans, Franklin Co, Vermont; The appointed committee was to apprise the estate by the first Monday of July 1799. The total amounted to more than $20,000, quite substantial for 1799. The court appointed two others to place notice in the Vergennes Gazette for any others to come forward with their claims for the next six months. It was later found that it must be delayed further, until the first Monday of June 1802.3
The first hotel in Swanton was built by Asa Holgate in 1793, according to George Barney, in his 1882 History of Swanton. It was run by Asa Holgate from 1793 to 1798 when he died. His widow, Jane Scott Holgate, managed it until 1802, when she married Theophilus Mansfield, and he took over until about 1822.4 He left a will on 25 April 1799 at Swanton, Franklin Co, Vermont; Asa left a certain bond against David Wilcox of Crown Point for a right of land in Mansfield, Vermont to his "honoured Father and Mother". He left his "loving wife Jane Holget all the rest of my goods and chattels and personal and real estate". Executors were Jane Holgate and his brother, Curtis.3
