James Kerr was born circa 1790 at Cornwallis, Kings Co, Nova Scotia. He was the son of James Kerr and Elizabeth Brown. James Kerr died on 14 August 1817 at Torbay, Devonshire, England; "Midshipman James Kerr of Nova Scotia d 14/8/1817 on board HMS Firth at Torbay."1 He was buried at St Mary's Parish Church, Brixham, Devon, England.1
An article written by Archie D. Gates, 13 September 1989, tells that James Kerr had joined the British Navy by 1808, and was serving with the fleet which reached New Orleans in December 1815, the main attack occurring 8 January 1816. This Battle of New Orleans is called the last battle of the War of 1812, and even occurred after the signing of the treaty but before the news hit America.
At this time, James was supposedly ill with "consumption" and was placed ashore at Bermuda, later going to Halifax and on to his family's home in Fox River. Apparently, he regained his health to some degree and left again with the Navy, only to die at Torbay while serving on the frigate H.M.S. "Forth".
