From an obituary (no date available) we know that James I. Scott, as he was known, "one of Marinette's prominent and well to do citizens, met with a tragic death...which shocked the entire community". While assisting others in moving a piano into the Scott opera house, he fell from the platform onto brick pavement below about 15 feet below. The following investigation showed that heart failure due to unusual exertion, not the fall, caused his death at about 4:30 PM. The article continues to tell us that he moved from Clarenceville first to Menasha. He moved to Marinette about 28-30 yrs before his death, and for many years made his home with W.S. Baker, his brother-in-law. He had accumulated a fortune through his horse sales business which he was involved with ever since coming to Marinette. "He was a man who had hewed out a successful career from a humble beginning...in vigorous health and thoroly[sic] enjoyed life". He was survived by two daughters, Nellie and Margaret, and a son Harold, along with two sisters and two brothers back in Clarenceville. He appeared on the census of 23 June 1870 at Menasha, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin.4
