George Wait was born on 22 March 1749 at Exeter, Washington Co, Rhode Island.1 He was the son of Samuel Wait and Sarah Greene. George Wait married Elizabeth (?). George Wait died after 1811 at Ontario.
It is definitely known that George and his brothers Jonathan and Benjamin did settle in the area of Canaan. They were of Kings District (Canaan/New Lebanon area) as of a 1779 tax listing.
Baptisms for both Enoch and Briggs Wait at Caldwell's Manor, Quebec in 1815, say they are sons of George & Elizabeth Wait of "New Canaan" in the state of New York. This likely was referencing where they were born, rather than the parents still living there.
A listing of many of the names mentioned in the Abel Peters' estate ca 1800, does list one George Wait. Many of those names listed were of Clinton Corners and area in Dutchess County.
George Wait was in Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario in 1797. Land records show his brother Benjamin, and his sons, Jencks and Isaac. There is also a George "Weight" and an Enoch. I suspect that both George and son Enoch tried Ontario for a time. George Waite appears in assessment listings in Haldimand Twp, Northumberland Co, Ontario in 1803, 1805, 1806, 1807 and 1811. Enoch moved to Quebec before 1812/13, possibly just after his father died.
It is likely that Samuel Wait, 69 yrs old in 1851 (b. c1782) is another son of George.2,3
