Morris Somes

     Morris Somes was born in 1614 at England.¹ He married Marjorie Johnson on 4 June 1635 at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. Morris Somes married Elizabeth Kendall, daughter of John Kendall and Elizabeth Sacherell, on 26 June 1648 at Cambridge, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts.² Morris Somes died on 13 January 1688/89 at Gloucester, Essex Co, Massachusetts; Morris Somes died 13 Jan. 1688/9, having an estate of s198/6/0, including oxen, cows, heifers, sheep, swine, the usual household goods and a musket.^3,4
     Morris Somes came to America and settled in Gloucester on the east side of Mill River in 1631. He left a will on 20 March 1683/84; His will is as follows: 20 March 1683/4 Will of Morris Somes of Gloucester, Exxes, in New England, not being in health of body but in perfect memory...unto my oldest son Timothy Somes s10 in cattle...to my daughter Mary Heymons s6...to my daughter Sarah Witham s6...to my son John Somes two Cowes..to my daughter Lidiah Williams two Cowes..to my daughter Patience Tapley (note should be Topliff)...to my daughter Abigail Somes s10 in goods and chattell..to my daughter Hannah Allen s6 in meat & corne...unto my son Timothy Somes's five children S10 in cattle, sheep or corn or meate..equally divided ..as they come of age...to my daughter Lydiah William's children s5 as they come of age...unto my son Nathaniel Somes all my house and lands which I am possessed of here in Gloucester both upland and meadow and all my goods and chattels paying out of it the legacy above expressed..for the comfortable maintenance of my wife..my son Nathaniel Somes to maintain her as a woman ought to be maintained in case my son Nathaniel should marry and his wife and his mother should not agree it is my will that she my wife should have the easter end of the house..2 cows..6 ewe sheep and 2 swine and to have her firewood provided at the door and corn to find her bread and mault to find her beere and my bedd and all that belongs to it and such household goods as she shall need to make use of..if son Nathaniel die before his mother, then the house and lands..for her natural life; if son Nathaniel die without an heir lawfully begotten, then my eldest son Timothy Somes and his two sons Joseph Somes and William Somes shall be the proper heirs to all my houses and lands..my said son Nathaniel Somes to be executor.
