Daniel Hovey was born on 7 December 1710 at Malden, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of James Hovey and Deborah Barlow. Daniel Hovey married Elizabeth Slap, daughter of Lt. John Slap and Elizabeth Marble, on 6 December 1732.1
Daniel's father gave him, by deed, 50 acres of land in Mansfield 16 Feb 1732/3, and he bought 70 acres in Mansfield on 26 May 1735 from Thomas Hovey.1 It appears that Daniel Hovey of Horton "being a seditious man, and contriving and intending the Liege Subjects of our said Lord the King to invite and move to Hatred and Dislike of the Government of this His Province on or about the 4th day of September in the 5th year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third now King of Great Britain...at the town aforesaid...did publish, utter and Declare with a loud voice these English words, following, to wit, I defy the orders of Mr.Belcher. meaning the Commander in Chief of this Province, or of George himself, meaning our said Lord the King, to the Great Scandal and Contempt of our said Lord the King and of his Governor and Commander in Chief of this Province, and to the Evil and pernicious example of all others in the like case offending and against the [? ] of our said Lord the King his Crown and Dignity". Sounds to this writer we had some fiesty ancestors well before the Revolution.
Found it interesting that the cover sheet had the words, "Our Sovereign King against Daniel Hovey, Sr, for [?] words."2,3 On May 24th and June 7th, 1770, the Nova Scotia Gazette listed the men who had not paid their "proper taxes" in Horton.4
