Thomas Sinex was born February 23, 1793 in Delaware and emigrated to New Albany, Clark County, now Floyd County, Indiana about the year 1816.  He married on April 17, 1818 (although some records indicate April 13, 1818) to Flora West, a daughter of Solomon West (deceased) and Hulda Jane West nee' Winfield, born December 2, 1801 at Mount Pleasant, Wayne County, Pennsylvania and died June 14, 1896 in Washington County, Indiana.  Thomas joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1818, was an active member throughout his lifetime.  He & Flora were members of the Board of Trustees for the Methodist Episcopal church.  He was a lumber merchant in which business he was later joined by his son Elisha West Sinex.  Sometime during the 1860s he had retired to his farm in/near Salem, Washington County, Indiana but shortly prior to his death on June 4, 1870 he had returned to spend the remaining days in New Albany under the care and supervision of his son, William G. Sinex, MD.  Thomas owned stock in the Merchants National Bank of New Albany, a Scholarship at Asbury University at Greencastle, and had in 1850 established a family burial area known as The Thomas Sinex Family Vault, at Fairview Cemetery (formerly Northern Burial Gound), New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.  He also served a term as Associate Judge in New Albany.  He was also instrumental in completing the building of the new courthouse which was completed in November 1824, except for the cupola which was handled by Seth Woodruff.  Thomas and Flora were the parents of the following children, namely:  Huldah Jane Sinex; Thomas Henry Sinex; William George Sinex Sr.; Elisha West Sinex Sr., Maria L. Sinex; Zerelda Chalista Sinex and Albert Leroy Sinex.

[NOTE:  Thomas & Flora West Sinex were also the parents of 3 children who died in infancy, namely:  Solomon W. born circa 1819, Anna M. born circa 1831 and Flora E. born circa 1834.  No other information is available or known at this time except for their being buried in the Thomas Sinex Family Vault at Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.]
 

 





1.  HULDAH JANE SINEX, eldest child of Thomas & Flora West Sinex born circa 1822, New Albany, Indiana; died October 17, 1873, New Albany, Indiana. Huldah Jane married John H. Woodfill on June 8, 1837 New Albany, Indiana. Huldah Jane & John were the parents Thomas William (died young); Flora Louise, Joseph (died young); John Daniel (died young); Thomas Sinex; Edward Brown; Mary Lucelia, Zerelda Adelaide.

 

 


2.  THOMAS H. SINEX, w/ wife Mary Elizabeth Ward -
was born in New Albany, Indiana, January 3, 1824. After public school and classes in the academy in his home town he entered Asbury University, later DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana in 1839. He received his BA degree in 1842. After graduation he studied law for almost a year before becoming a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was first a member of the Indiana Conference before he was quite 20. He also taught at Asbury Female College at New Albany, and was principal of the Female Academy in Bloomington, Indiana in 1854 when he was chosen to head the institution at Albion. He had just passed his 30th birthday. It was during the ten years of his administration that Albion became a full-fledged college of liberal arts - this in the middle of the 19th century.
 
He was a member of the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1864, the year he left Albion for Santa Clara, California for three years as a pastor. From this position he returned to academic life by becoming the president of the University of the Pacific and retained the presidency until 1872. He resigned the presidency and became a mathematics professor at the California institution. He also helped write the By-Laws for Pacific Grove, California. In Pacific Grove there is a street ~ Sinex Avenue ~ named in his honor.

Thomas Henry Sinex and Mary Elizabeth Ward were married September 18, 1848 in Cass County, Indiana, His death occurred on February 1, 1898, they were the parents of a son, William Ward Sinex born August 22, 1849 and died August 24, 1850 in New Albany, Indiana, and a daughter Ella Jane Sinex (below).

3.  WILLIAM GEORGE SINEX, SR., second son, and third child born to Thomas and Flora West Sinex.  He was born circa 1826 in New Albany, Indiana and died March 25, 1899 in New Albany, Indiana. According to newspaper items he was a MD.

William George Sinex and Elizabeth J. Finn were married on June 4, 1848 ~ New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana, and to this union was born Flora Eugenia Sinex born circa 1849 and died November 14, 1864 in Greenville, Indiana; and William George Sinex (Jr) who was born August 30, 1857 in New Albany and died March 27, 1906 in New Albany, Indiana.

4.  ELISHA WEST SINEX, SR. - Elisha West Sinex (sr) was born circa 1829 and was the third son/fourth child born to Thomas and Flora West Sinex. He was born in New Albany, Indiana and died August 4, 1887 in Washington County, Indiana. He is buried at Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana. He was united in marriage on June 1, 1852 to Caroline Kerns, eldest daughter of the Rev. John Kerns and Edna Smith Kerns and to this union was born the following:

1. Infant child ~ only known info was date of death of October 22, 1854 and buried at Fairview Cemetery, New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana.

2. Elizabeth F. Sinex was born August 11, 1855 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana and died May 6, 1909. Elizabeth married Hiram F. White on August 18, 1889 in Washington County, Indiana.

3. Flora Edna Sinex was born February 26, 1857 and died June 1, 1917 and is buried in the Rodman Cemetery, Franklin Township, Washington County, Indiana. On November 26, 1874 she was united in marriage to Newton Edward Rodman and to this union was born the following children, namely: Elisha W. Rodman; Lee Rodman; Ford Rodman; Newton Edward Rodman jr; Effie Lorane Rodman; Warren Rodman; Daughter (name unknown) Rodman; Benton Rodman.


4. Maria L. Sinex (pictured left) was born March 18, 1862 in Nicollett County, Minnesota and died April 22, 1944 in Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington. She was united in marriage on October 1, 1885 to Harvey C. Walker and to this union two children were born, namely ~ a daughter Nora C. Walker, and a son Frank E. Walker. Harvey C. 5. Thomas Sinex was born April 17, 1866 in Mankato, Minnesota and died October 24, 1921 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. He was united in marriage on September 4, 1887 to Lieuella Ozena Walker and to this union was born the following children: Beulah Chomial, Mabel Gertrude, Reuben Thomas, Elisha Ford, Ella Ruth, Joyce Leola, Lena Fern, Paul (stillborn), and Melvin Leroy.

6. John Karnes Sinex was born near South Boston, Indiana January 19, 1871 and died April 11, 1903 in Chevanes, Illinois. His body was transported to New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana for burial. He never married.


7. Elisha West Sinex Jr was born February 28, 1873 in Indiana, died May 18, 1941 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. He was united in marriage to Maude Bambraugh on April 15, 1901 in Iowa County, Wisconsin, and to this marriage was born three daughters: Lucille, Gladys Marie and Marian Maude. (picture on left is thought to be Elisha West Sinex).  Shown below, left to right, are the three daughters of Elisha West Sinex, Jr., & Maude Bambrough, namely:  Lucille Sinex & husband Guerdon A. Reed, Sr.; Gladys Marie Sinex with husband Wray M. Lewis; and Marian Maude Sinex.

5.  MARIA L. SINEX - 5th child (2nd daughter) born circa 1836 to Thomas Sinex & Flora West Sinex was married December 18, 1856 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana to Thomas Loraine Collins. Maria died September 16, 1902 at Beechwood Farm, Salem, Washington County, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Thomas Loraine Collins. There are no known children born of this union.

 

6.  ZERELDA CHALISTA SINEX - the 6th child (3rd daughter) born circa 1839 to Thomas Sinex and Flora West Sinex was married May 17, 1865 to James W. Spence. She has also been shown as Zerelda Caroline but no given proof of either middle name is known. Zerelda & James were the parents of two known children ~ Eva and Alberta.

 

7.  ALBERT LEROY SINEX - the 7th and youngest child born circa 1841 to Thomas Sinex and Flora West Sinex was married June 23, 1863 to Christa E. McArthur and they were the parents of a son Albert Sinex who died in infancy and a daughter Mittie Ford Sinex who married Winfield C. Snyder on August 31, 1899 in Salem, Washington County, Indiana.  Albert Leroy Sinex died July 27, 1868 in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana (see Moore-Sinex Homicide for further details).
