North Carolina’s earliest settlers were the second and third sons of aristocratic English families, former English indentured servants, and German Palatines fleeing war. Scottish and Irish immigrants followed.

North Carolina’s settlers planted tobacco and cotton along the fertile coast but over the years they failed to industrialize like other parts of the country.

After the American Civil War, the cotton trade collapsed leaving many farmers impoverished. Eventually new industries in timber, furniture manufacturing, and textiles provided employment opportunities.
