Descendants of JOHN (HADDAM FOUNDER) BAILEY

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN (HADDAM FOUNDER)1 BAILEY was born Abt 1618 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, and died June 17, 1696 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married LYDIA BACKUS 1655 in Wethersfield, Hartford, CT, daughter of WILLIAM BACKUS and SARAH GARDINER.

Notes:  From the notes of Adolphus Hiram Sage: John Bailey, The First, of Haddam

John Bailey, one of the twenty eight original proprietors of Haddam, CT 1662, was the progenitor of one of the largest Bailey families in America. He is said to have appeared in Hartford about 1642 where he resided on "South Side" which probably meant in the vicinity of Wethersfield. He was Constable and Tax Collector during the years 1656 and 1657 and was made a "freeman" by the General Court at Hartford, May 21, 1657. (CT. Pub. Rec. 1-297)

John Bailey was probably from England, but his origin has not been difinitely learned. In May, 1638 a vessel "The Bevis" from Southhampton, England arrived in New England with four passengers named Bailey: these were John aged 20, Servant, Mary aged 22, Richard aged 15, and Henry from Saco(Sarum?) aged 26 a Tanner. (Source-Compete Book of Emigrants: 1607-1660 by P.W. Coldham) Whether these four were in any way related is not known. If this was our John Bailey, he would have been 24 years of age when he arrived in Hartford in 1642 and these figures compare well with the known data of his subsequent life. This John Bailey was evidently born about 1618 and if he was the John Bailey of Hartford and Haddam, he must have been about 78 years of age when he died at Haddam in 1696.

There was a John Bailey in Guilford, CT very early and possibly as early as 1640, who remained there but a short time. About the same time there appeared in Guilford, a Thomas Smith who was given a considerable portion of land if he would settle there as blacksmith and remain at least five years. Smith remained there five years and then moved to Killingworth, now called Clinton, CT. This Thomas Smith was probably the man named Smith who was also one of the twenty-eight original proprietors of Haddam, CT in 1662.

About 1655, John Bailey married Lydia (Backus) and their first three children were born at Hartford, or at least before they settled in Haddam.

The first settlement at Haddam was on the low ground immediately north of the present village and on the western border of the great meadow which is still a notable natural feature of the landscape there. The tract of land, including the great meadow, and extending some 60 or 70 rods westward from the river was divided into lots of about seven acres each and drawn as home lots of the original proprietors in 1662. The actual settlement was probably made in Spring of 1665. Thomas Smith's lot was south of Gerard Spencer's whose lot has remained in the Spencer family at least until the early 20th century. John Bailey had the next lot south of Thomas Smith and built his house on the rise of ground where the present house stands on the east side of the road. Next house south of John Bailey's was Daniel Brainard's.

- John Bailey came from England to Connecticut with two brothers. One of his two brothers (names of the brothers are unknown) had several sons (Amaziah, John, Timothy, and Richard are known)

- John Bailey was one of the original 28 founders of Haddam, CT.

- John Bailey was made a Freeman by CT on 21 May 1657 by the court in Hartford (where John was before going to Haddam).

- There is a hand-drawn map of the Haddam area showing the original residence of John Bailey called "Higganum". This was located between the CT river and Candlewood Brook. Slightly to the Northwest is an area called "Baileyville". Current maps of CT show bothe Higganum and Baileyville.

- The "Connecticut Public Records contain numerous citations of this John Bailey.

- He was given a receipt for 60 Pounds that he had collected in his capacity as Constable.

- On 24 Sep 1669 he is listed as a Freeman of Haddam.

- John Bailey of Hartford in 1648 and 1666 and of Haddam in 1676 was the father of the Bailey Family of that place, per "Hinnard's (?) Private Settlers".

- John Bailey (Sr.) died 1696, will dated 17 Jun, 1696. The will mentions his eldest son John and other sons Benjamin (our ancestor) and Nathaniel, land in Haddam at a place called "Higganum", and daughters Lydia, Susannah, and Mary. On the back of the will he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Clark and my son Thomas Clark.

- "General History of Ct, Pg. 1797"   The Haddam Bailey's began with John Bailey, immigrant, who came from England to Haddam, but first in Hartford 1656-57 and May, 1659. Died at Haddam, 1696. Had sons Benjamin and John (Benjamin had John, Benjamin, and Nathaniel).

- "Manwaring's Hartford Wills"   Thomas Smith died 2 Nov 1674; will dated 22 Sep 1674. He wills his property to "Wife of John Bailey , Daniel Brainwood (Brainard?), James Wells, Nicholas Noyes, John Smith, John Bailey, Daniel Cone (?), Kpse[j Stennard and Steven Luxford. Executors: John Bailey and David Brainard, who declined.

- On 28 Dec 1728, John Bailey, Jr. of Haddam, was appointed Administrator of the eatate of Thomas Smith, "Late of Haddam". The court ordered the estate distributed according to the will of Thomas Smith. Distributees: John Bailey, heirs of Lydia Spencer, dec'd, Elizabeth Clark, Benjamin Bailey, heirs of Susannah Hubbard, Nathaniel Bailey, Mary Cornwell and the children of Lydia Bailey, dec'd. It appears that 54 years later, John Bailey Jr. had located additional estate assets not previously inventoried. (1-234)

- Among the very early Baileys in the New England were:

1. William Bailey of R.I. very early.

2. Stephen Bailey of Southold, L.I. before 1673 and probably much earlier. Associations between this and the Haddam family might seem to indicate some degree of relationship.

3. Thomas Bailey was given a home lot at Milford, CT in 1646.

4. Another Thomas Bailey was one of the original proprietors of New London in 1651.

5. Among the earliest settlers of New Haven was "Samuel Baile".

4. BENJAMIN2 BAILEY (JOHN (HADDAM FOUNDER)1) was born November 11, 1665 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died July 1740 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married (1) . He married (2) SARAH 1696-1702.

Notes:  Benjamin lived with his wife Sarah at Higganum, where he owned a considerable estate including the "grist mill" at the falls.

Benjamin received from Stephen Miller of Middletown, his rights in the grist mill at Higganum. (Was his wife the daughter of Stephen Miller?) His wife could have been the daughter of Hezekiah Brainard.

If the first settlers at Haddam built their log houses here in the Spring of 1665, then Benjamin Bailey was probably born there that Autumn. He was nearly 35 years of age when about 1698-1700 he married Sarah whose family name has not been found. He was an active businessman and his transactions were numerous as shown by the town records. Besides his home and property at Higganum near the falls, he owned property at Haddam, on Shopboard brook, and on Higganum river middle branch. His signature was always by mark. At first this mark was a cross (X), but later he wrote the letter "B". About 1730 when he was 65 years of age his health seems to have become impaired, for his business activities declined and on Feb 18 the following Spring he made a deed of gift to his "dear wife Sarah" of a considerable portion of his estate both real and personal. May 25, 1739 he gave several pieces of land and all the remainder of his personal estate to his son Benjamin with whom he and Sarah evidently spent their last days. Here he died the next year 1740 before August 5th. It is probable that he and Sarah are burried at Haddam.

Benjamin Bailey was born November 11, 1665 probably at Haddam. The original settlers there selected the ground and laid out their home lots in 1662 just north of the present village, but it is certain that they did not settle on these lots until a later date, probably 1665. If they came to the settlement in the Spring of 1665 then Benjamin Bailey may have been the first child born in that town. Nothing is known of Benjamin's early life except that he grew up in his father's family at Haddam. He had no schooling excepting that afforded by the contact with the pioneers of his community and the ruggedness and grandure of the mountains, forests, and rivers of his wilderness home. Although he was nearly thirty one years of age at the time of his father's death in 1696, he was still unmarried. Not long after this date, however, he did marry, but the name of his wife's family has not been found. On March 15, 1734 he received, apparently by deed of gift from Stephen Miller of Middletown, all of Miller's rights in the grist mill standing on Benjamin's land at Higganum. This has given rise to the impression that Benjamin's wife may have been Miller's daughter. In 1731, Banjamin gave his "dear wife Sarah" a considerable portion of his personal property. This is the first and only mention of her name that has been found. They were probably married between 1696 and 1702. In 1739, Benjamin gave to his second son Benjamin, Jr., an additional portion of his lands and all the remainder of his personal estate. (Deeds III-192) He was then about seventy four years of age and fronm the nature of the transaction it is assumed that he then went to live with his son Benjamin Jr. In the transfer to his son, he speaks of the gift to his "dear wife Sarah" in 1731 and the implicationis that she was still living in 1739 but nothing furthur is known of her. On the 24th of June, 1740, Benjamin Bailey sold a piece of land "west of Higganum" to Thomas Bevin. The record does not state whether this was Benjamin Sr. or Jr., but as the customs of our forefathers would almost certainly have designated the younger man as "Jr." it seems certain that this transfer was made by Benjamin Sr. On the 4th day of August of this year, Benjamin Bailey Jr. sold to Capt. John Fisk, land from the estate of his "father Benjamin Bailey, dec'd". From these two transactions, we learn that Benjamin Bailey, Sr., died in 1740 probably during the month of July. Benjamin Sr.'s home was at Higganum where he lived in a house which stood nearly on the spot occupied by the house of Roswell Reed in 1910. The records show that he was the principal owner of the grist mill near his home and at times owned lands at Higganum, Ponset, Haddam, and Durham.

Reference to "Haddam Deeds" includes the information that Benjamin Bayly was borne 11 Nov 1665. And on 30 Jan 1698, John and Benjamin Bailey, brothers exchanged land.

Notes:  There were numerous Bailey's at or near Ponset,CT between 1700 and 1750. Samuel lived at or near Ponset, CT untill 1748. The early records refer to the Bailey's as residing on the road from Haddam to Durham.

Samuel was in the army most of the time throughout his middle life and records of him and his family at Haddam are few. He sold out in 1748 and probably went to Fairfield Co., CT where he spent his last years probably with one of his sons Joseph or Comfort.

"Muster Rolls, NY Provincial Troops: 1755 - 1764" is cited showing that, in the Suffolk Co., NY roll was Samuel (SR.) Bailey, born Haddam (CT) 1713, Laborer.

"General History of CT, Pg. 1797"

Samuel Bailey Sr. had a destinguished military history over many years. He was at the siege of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia 1744-45 under Nathan Whiting. His son Samuel Jr. joined up at age 15 and they served together. Samuel Jr. later served with the CT troops in the NY Provincial Troops in the French and Indian War under Capt. Street Hall; was on the roll 21 Jun 1755. On a roll dated April 4, 1759, we find Samuel Bailey Sr., age 46 from Haddam, CT and Ephraim Bailey, age 18, also from Haddam (his son) enrolled in Capt. Gilbert Potter's Co. of Suffolk, L.I., NY troops

Samuel declared himself to be 46 years of age when he enlisted in Capt. Potter's Militia Company in 1759, hence he would have been born in 1713, but this may have been due to his desire to get in as one under 45 years of age. The Town of Haddam granted him three acres of land on January 18, 1932 and it thus seems possible that he became twenty one years of age about that time, which would make his date of birth about 1710-11. His life up to 1750 seems to have been spent largely or entirely at Haddam, excepting for a few months service in the expedition against Louisburg in 1744-45. His home, at least during the later years of his residence at Haddam appears to have been out on the road from Haddam to Durhan and near the latter place.

The last record found of him at Haddam is in November 23, 1748 whe he sold his land at Durham. He probably left Haddam soon after this date and settled for a time in Fairfield County at or near North Stratford. But before 1759 he was a resident of Suffolk County, NY at the east end of Long Island. His history subsequent to this date is very uncertain. Later there resident in Orange County, NY a Samuel Bailey stated in his military records that he was born in Haddam, CT. It is probable that Samuel spent time there (Maby his last years) in Orange County, NY at or near Goshen.

Notes:  Joseph Bailey lived in Fairfield Co., CT at one time with his brother Comfort.

On March 16, 1761, Joseph and Comfort Bailey petitioned for a place of worship nearer their homes. They were living in North Stratford and Ripton Townships.

Joseph was on the colonial muster roll in Berkshire Co., Ma during the French and Indian War ( 1760). He also served in the Revolution and received Bounty Land, which he sold/assigned to someone else. He served with the 5th Rgmt. He was married twice. Joseph may have been in Dutchess Co., NY in 1790, where Josiah Bugbee was also found.

Joseph Bailey (Sr) was one of the early settlers of the Northeast corner of New Lebanon, Columbia Co., NY (Note: this is very near the Stephentown, Rensselaer Co., area where Samuel and Ephraim Bailey first settled) - Reference was made to Ellis' "History of Columbia County, NY" - Pg. 302.

Orcutt's "History of Stratford & Bridgeport, CT" - Pg. 1084 is cited with reference to a petition in the CT State Ecclesiastical Records, Vol. XII, Pg. 209, dated 16 Mar., 1761, asking for permission to establish a separate church and signed by, among others, Joseph Bailey. Permission was granted, and the New Stratford Church was established. Joseph and Comfort Bailey were among those who petitioned. They were living in North Stratford and Ripton Townships.

I presently suspect that Joseph Bailey migrated from CT to Dutchess Co., NY and then up to Rensselaer Co., NY. It is reported in Adolphus Sage's papers in the NYS Archives that Joseph and his brother Comfort are to be found on a colonial muster roll in 1760 in Berkshire Co., MA Judy Rowe of Sand Lake has a note that a Joseph Bailey was an early resident of Hancock, MA (Berkshire Co., MA). These may not all be the same Joseph Bailey.

A Joseph Bailey served in the Rev. War with the NY 2nd Rgmt. His military file was obtained from the National Archives and indicates where he was on duty between the fall of 1778 and early 1783 with the Colonel's Company, 2nd NY Rgmt. of Foot, commanded by Col. Philip Cortlandt:

There is also a Bounty Land Warrant for Joseph Bailey issued September 15, 1790. This had been assigned to an Alex McDougall who had apparently died and named a John S. Hobart as Executor. This was Warrent #6789. The originals of these files were apparently destroyed in the War Dept. fire.

I am looking for information on the Backus, Bailey, and Gardiner family connection in CT during the 1600's. I have traced back to my ancestor John Bailey one of the 28 founders of Haddam, CT in 1662. He was listed as a Freeman of Hartford in 1657 and a Freeman of Haddam in 1669. John Bailey moved to Haddam in 1662 and died there on June 17, 1696. John Bailey married Lydia Backus abt 1655 in Wethersfield, CT. John Bailey was mentioned in the will of William Backus as the husband of one of his daughters. I cannot find any information on how, when, or where John Bailey arrived in America. I would also like to find out the last name of his son Benjamin's wife. Benjamin was born on November 11, 1665 in Haddam, CT and was probably the first birth in that Town. Benjamin married a Sarah\\, and I believe her last name could be Miller because he received total ownership by "deed of gift" the in a "grist mill" that both he and Mr. Miller owned and operated in Higganum, CT. The wife of John Bailey was Lydia Backus the daughter of William Backus who settled in Saybrook, CT in 1638 and removed to Norwich,CT in 1660 and was one of the original proprietors. William Backus became a Freeman of Norwich in 1663 and died there in 1664. I have found a mention of William Backus as having come from England (I believe Sheffield) with his sons Stephen and William by Sarah (the daughter of Lyon Gardnier). I cannot find the hometown in England for William but I believe it was Norwich. Familey history has it that Norwich, CT was named by William as the oldest living founder and he named the settlement after his birthplace. In researching the Gardnier family, Lyon(Lion) was found to be the builder of the first fort at Saybrook in March of 1636. Lyon also was a major figure in the Pequot War and the founder of Gardnier's Island, L.I., NY. I believe this Lion is her brother and both were the children of Lion Gardnier and Elizabeth Woodhouse. The only mention of Lyon's family I can find lists his marriage to Mary Deurcant on July 10, 1635 in Woredom, Holland and having children David (the first white birth in CT), Mary, Lion, and Elizabeth. Any help you could give me on any of these families would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, in advance for your help.
