I present Lossing's works essentially as is except that where there have been obvious errors in either words or dates due typesetting I have noted both the erroneous and the correct spelling or date. The graphics scans came out better than I had expected given the quality of the originals and the relatively primitive tools I have to work with.
A number of unfamiliar words and phrases popped up during the transcription; e.g., "recruit" can be used to mean "replenish" or "to restore or increase". I heartily recommend keeping the on-line version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary available for use when needed.
