DAVID MARTIN and wife, Susannah Roberts (Robards) were in St James Northam Parish, Goochland Co VA in 1758. They probably married 1756-57. The following could be their birth records: David Martin, b. 23 Sep 1735, baptized 14 Dec 1735, St Peter's Parish, New Kent Co VA, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Martin. Susahna Roberrs, b. 28 Jan 1739, baptized 3 Jun 1739, St Peter's Parish, daughter of John and Susanna Roberts.
Martins of New Kent Co purchased land in Goochland Co as early as 1739. John Robards purchased 280 acres in Goochland Co (DB 4, p. 356) known as Mills Plantation on 15 May 1744. The land was on Licklnghole Creek to the lines of John Payne and Benjamin Woodson. Wit: John Payne, Josias Payne and Robert Woodson.
Goochland Co land tax records show David Martin was taxed on 235 acres in 1786 until 1789 when he had 230 acres. Approx 3 1/2 acres was sold to Charles Massie in 1800; and in 1801 David and wife, Susanna appear to have sold all their land (200 acres more or less) to their son David Jr.
In the fall of 1805, David Jr sold all land acquired from his father and moved to Kentucky. The acres owned by David were bounded by lands belonging to Robert Payne and Charles Massie, et at. David Sr and wife are deceased before November 1825 according to South Carolina court records.
Land owners in New Kent Co and James City Co in 1704, as evidenced by The Quit Rent list (those required to pay the King two shillings per hundred acres): James City Co: Richard Martin (150 A). New Kent Co: William Martin (230 A); John Martin (400 A); James Martin (100 A); Martin Martin (150A); and Thomas Martin (100 A). Peter Masey (progenitor Of the Massie family) and Thomas Masey are also listed in New Kent Co.12

This indenture made this forten day Of June eighteen hundred between David Martin sen Of the County of Goochland of the one part and Charles Massie of the same county of the other part witnesseth that the said David Martin sen for and in consideration of the sum of five pounds current money to him in hand paid by the said Charles Massie both granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Charles Massie his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Goochland and bounded as following plott hereunto annext. To have and to hold the said land and premises unto the said Charles Massie his heirs and assigns forever, and the said David Martin sen doth hereby covenant and agree for himself his heirs executors administrators and assigns that the said Charles Massie his heirs etc. shall and may from time to time and at all times forever hereafter peacably and quietly have hold, possess and enjoy the above land and premises without any kind of interruption and the said David Martin sen for himself his heirs and assigns doth warrant the title of the aforesaid three and a half acres of land unto the said Charles Massie his heirs and assigns forever against the claim or claims of any person or persons whatsoever. This indenture made this fifth day of December in the year of our Lord 1801 between David Martin Sent and Susanna, his wife, of the county of Goochland and state of Virginia of the one part and David Martin Junr of the same county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said David Martin Senr and Susanna his wife for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred pounds current money of Virginia in hand paid by the said Davmd Martin Junr the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge hath granted, bargained, sold, aliened, released en__and and confirmed and by these present doth bargain sell and deliver to the said David Martin Junr for his heirs, executors and administrators or assigns one certain piece or parcel of land with its appertenances containing by estimation two hundred acres be the same more or less, lying and being in the parish of St James Northam, county aforesaid, bound by the lands of James Tiller, George Goodloe, Robert Payne, Ephraim P Hooten, Charles Massie and Finch Ragland. On the 21st day of November 1836 personally appeared in open court before the Court of Hardin County now sitting David Martin a widower in the County of Hardin and State of Kentucky aged 75 years who being first duly sworn according to law and on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain this benefit of the Act of Congress passed on June the 7th 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officer and served as herein stated. That he resided in Goochland County State of Virginia and in about 1779 or 80 in the County and State aforesaid he entered into the service of the United States as a militia man under the command of Captain Joseph Leek and marched under the said Leek from the said County of Goochland through Fluvanna and Albemarle and was one of the guards under said Captain of Burgoynes men who were prisoners in Albemarle County Virginia and served in the capacity aforesaid for the term of six months and that he entered on a second tour in the year 1781 the day and month not precisely recollected in the County and State aforesaid under the command of Captain William Miller and served six months under him the said Miller being his Captain the higher officers were Colonel Taylor and Major Camel. He served the aforesaid tour as a militia man under said officers and at the time he entered the service than and from thence marched through Hanover, King & Queen and Gloucester Counties in the State of Virginia and states he was not in any battle but marched under these officers as a mere guard or infantry to the Army. Said that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his service.
He relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name in not on any pension roll of the agency of any state.

1878: The 250 acre farm of David Martin, Jr. was sold and in the Division of land, the heirs are listed. And it is from this list we have uncovered some of the early names. Why it would be sold so late is also a puzzle, as he died in 1840's and Moab, his son, with first wife, Verinda and second wife Roberta, all lived on it.70

I do not think it is possible for Mausfield to the son of Jane since her age would have been 64 at the time of his birth. Doris Duffie wrote Mausfield should be Mansfield and was the son of Susan Duffee (age 28), Susan Martin is the sister of Jane Martin. He was a farmer.97,98

Ella Hayward, the eldest daughter of Walter and Mary (Markey) Hayward, and grandaughter James and Margaret (Howel) Hayward, was married to Abe Gardner Duffie in 1889. Abe was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and came with his parents to Missouri when a young man. Soon after their marriage, Ella and Abe went to housekeeping on a farm southeast of Kirksville, Missouri, owned by Ella's grandfather, James Hayward. The grandfather later deeded the farm to Ella and her husband and here they continued to live and rear their family of eight children -- three daughters and five sons -- and here the father, Abe Duffie, died and was buried in Cater Memorial Cemetery. The mother, Ella, remained on the farm after her husband's death until the children, one by one , finished their schooling and went out on their own. She then sold the farm and moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where she lived for a number of years. She died in the home of of her eldest son, Warren Luther Duffie, and was buried in Cater Memorial Cemetery beside her husband. Ella and Abe were members of the Methodist Church.259
