Arvel Scott Weakley [Parents] was born 3 Aug 1899 in Clay County, MO. He died 22 Dec 1994 in Merriam, Johnson County, KS. The cause of death was Congestive Heart Failure. He was buried 27 Dec 1994 in Floral Hills Cemetery, Jackson County, MO. He married Wilma V. Avis 25 Dec 1924 in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO. [Picture]

In his own words...

I, Arvel S. Weakley, was born on a farm in Clay County, Missouri, about mid way between Holt in Clay County and Lawson in Ray County. My brother, Rutherford E. Weakley, was born on the same farm, in the same house, 16 years, 1 month and 26 days later. The recession that followed World War I, with such wide fluctuations in farm product prices, indicated to me that I no longer desired to be a pharmacist. That's what they called we farmers. After furthering my education at Chillicothe Business College, I headed for the big city where I obtained employment. After deciding on a career in the city, I talked dad and mom into retiring from the farm and moving to North Kansas City where they purchased a five room bungalow at 2114 Kenwood Avenue (street name eventually changed to Gentry) I then moved back home with them.

George Scott Weakley [Parents] was born 26 Jul 1843 in Shelby, KY. He died 18 Dec 1888 in Clinton, MO. He was buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Clinton County, Missouri. He married Sarah Emerson 25 Apr 1869 in Clinton, MO.  [Picture] [Tombstone Picture]

His grandson, Arvel S. Weakley wrote:
Grandfather Weakley became a victim of pneumonia at age 45, leaving grandmother a widow with six children under 17 years of age. She moved the family back from Vernon County and purchased a 56 ½ acre farm 4 miles east of Holt, Missouri and 5 miles west of Lawson, known as the Searcy farm. Here the two teenage boys, Thomas and Walter, farmed and made the living for the family. In a few years Thomas went back to Vernon County and married Vernie Farmer, a girl whom he had met while living there a few years before. Vernie died in 1915, leaving Uncle Tom with three children, Flora the oldest and Glenn and Rose the twins. Uncle Tom never remarried and continued to live on the farm even after all the children were married. When he passed away at the age 82, he was laid to rest in the cemetery at Dearfield, Missouri, beside his wife who had died at age 35.

George S. Weakley is listed on the Buchanan County Patrons of Atlas of 1877 which gave the following information: His post office was in Gower, Clinton County, Missouri, he was born in Shelby County, Kentucky and he came to Buchanan County, Missouri in 1870.

George and his brother William, were in the 81st Enrolled Missouri Militia Company I a Union Company composed of southern sympathizers. George's nephew, Floyd Lee Weakley, William's son, served in the Spanish-American War. There is a discrepancy as to his rank, either Major or Colonel.

He also wrote:
In April, 1909*, just before Easter, grandma Weakley embarked upon that journey from which no traveler has ever returned. There was no will. The estate consisted of a small farm, a residence in a nearby town and little, if any cash. By mutual agreement, the town property was given to the only living daughter. Dad purchased the farm and paid the other heirs, three brothers, their proportionate share. Dad has now settled down on the farm for the balance of what might be considered his more active years.

Gerome Lafayette Moberly [Parents] was born April 16, 1848 in Madison, KY. He died July 18, 1915 in Texas. He was buried in Barnesville Cemetery located in Clinton County Missouri.  He married Lavina Meadows Quisenberry about 1876. [Tombstone Picture]    [Court Case]

His grandson Arvel S. Weakley wrote:

The vicissitudes of life seemed to be forming a certain pattern for this family for it was in 1914 when grandpa Moberly, who owned a number of acres of farm land in Clay and Clinton County, Missouri, decided he would look for greener pastures in Texas. So, leaving his family behind, he journeyed to El Campo where he purchased a goodly number of acres of pine timber land. He had practically completed a new house on a portion of the property when, one afternoon, a cyclone dropped down out of the sky and completely demolished the dwelling. Although grandpa slightly injured, his life was spared due the fact that he lay in a nearby ditch until the storm subsided.

After this episode, grandpa sold his holdings in this locality and purchased 1200 acres of pine timber land in the vicinity of Cleveland and Conroe Texas. He also purchased a sawmill, processed much of the timber and placed the proceeds in the bank of Conroe which failed. When people became skeptical of banks in those days, they did something else with their money other than depositing it in the bank. After his experience with the Bank of Conroe, grandpa decided he would conceal the cash received from the sale of the lumber from the balance of the timber, somewhere other than the bank. He maintained a ledger in which a record of the location of this cash was revealed. This was for the convenience of his family in case something happened to him.

In July, 1916, grandpa became ill and passed away with none of his family present. When one of his sons went to Texas to bring the body back to Missouri, for burial in Old Barnesville Cemetery, he located the ledger but it had apparently already been found by some of the natives, as all the hiding places ha been ransacked.
