The tombstone was brought to the cemetery in three pieces, according to Ed Copeland. The bottom section, weighed 10 tons, the center section 17 tons and the top about a ton - twenty-eight tons altogether. It was shipped to Millport and sent to the cemetery on a funeral wagon pulled by eight horses which made three trips. According to family legend, it was during the frost season and manure was taken from the stables and thrown onto the road to keep the wagon from sinking. Copeland also notes - family speculated that maybe the Reverend's mother was Catholic as he was the lone Catholic in a family of Protestants. |
