Front of Lindesmith Monument
This is the front of the large Lindesmith monument located at St. Philip Neri (Dungannon) Cemetery
Franklin Twp., Columbiana County, OH
Twenty-two years before his own death, Rev. Eli Washington John Lindesmith had a huge granite monument erected
in St. Paul's Cemetery on Route 407.
On the left side, it says "I erected this monument before my death 1900) and on the right side it says,
"May the souls of my departed relations, the American soldiers, and of all the faithful departed, through
the mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen"
Below there is a history of Father Lindesmith, "Chaplain of the United States Regular Army, Born
Sept. 7, 1827, Son of a volunteer soldier, Grandson of a soldier of the War of 1812, Grandnephew of
two soldiers of the War of 1812, Great-grandson of a soldier of the War of the Revollution of 1776,
Ordained priest, July 8, 1855, Served as chaplain in the Rocky Mountains, during the Indian Wars,
from June 19, 1880 to Sept. 7, 1891."
Died February 6, 1922
Age 95 years
Note - He would have been only 94 if this death date is correct.

The tombstone was brought to the cemetery in three pieces, according to Ed Copeland.  The bottom section, weighed 10 tons, the center section 17 tons and the top about a ton - twenty-eight tons altogether.  It was shipped to Millport and sent to the cemetery on a funeral wagon pulled by eight horses which made three trips.  According to family legend, it was during the frost season and manure was taken from the stables and thrown onto the road to keep the wagon from sinking.  Copeland also notes - family speculated that maybe the Reverend's mother was Catholic as he was the lone Catholic in a family of Protestants.
