16. Joshua T. WEST
He or his father may have been in the Company of Richmond Grays.
---------------------
From Records from the West Family Bible, by Joseph Simeon West:
Joshua, son of Joshua and Milberry West his wife, born January 26, 1818.
Joshua West departed this life May 3, 1865 aged 48 (47?) years. His remains are resting in the family burying ground in Portstocks Grave Yard near Portsmouth, VA.
Joshua West married Sarah Frances Wigington at house of Robert Wigington in Moyock, Currituck Co., North Carolina, by Reverend Evan Forbes on Sunday April 2, 1843. Marriage license recorded in Currituck County.
-------------------------
In the Currituck County, Accounts of Sales, Vol. 1, 1833 - 1843., P. 113. Account of Sales of the property of Joshua West died. Sold on a audit of six months March the 10th 1835.
(Among the buyers, Robert Wigington is mentioned. Joshua T. must have been contemporary with Robert Wigington. His daughter-in-law was Sarah Frances Wigington, the grandaughter of Robert Wigington. If this is the same Robert Wigington, rather than a son of Robert, or a Robert Jr., that would mean that he was still alive in 1834.)
-------------------------
1850 and 1860 Censuses of Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., Virginia indicate that Joshua West (IV) was a laborer, possibly working in the Portsmouth, Virginia shipyard. (Note: there was a lot of sloppy note taking in the 1850 census.)

Records from the West Family Bible of Joseph Simeon West:
Robert and Elizabeth Wigington begat James Wigington. James Wigington married Frances Whitehead and they begat Sarah Frances Wigington.
Sarah Frances daughter of James & Frances Wigington born Oct 30, 1816.
James remarried in 1820 to Milberry Drake. I suspect she was more a mother to Sarah, as she probably never knew, or remembered her real mother, if the reason for the separation between her father and her mother was death..

18. John SAUNDERS
BIRTH DATE: AGE 35 IN 1850
According to the file on John Saunders found in the Church's Family File computer program, his birth date was possibly in 1805.
I believe this is my ancester because he has a sister named Sarah Augusta Saunders. Her middle name is the same as my Great Grandmother's (Annie Augusta Saunders). Plus he has a sister named Sarah, and Annie's sister is named Sarah. Coincidence???
BIRT DATE AGE 23 IN 1850 (LDS Church Records)
20. Elwood F. MOORE
On his pension application, applied for by his second wife Mollie M. (Bradfield) Moore he was listed as an invalid due to a wound he contracted in the war.
Paul West
---------------------------------
According to the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Pike Co., Pebble Twp., Ohio, Elwood F. Moore was b. abt. 1839 or 1838. He was a farmer. His farm was valued at 1344 in 1870 and personal property at 416.
Elwood's wife was named Samaria. She was b. abt. 1842 or 41.
The 1870 Census lists the family:
Edward (Elwood) F. Moore, age 31, Farmer, b. Ohio
Samaria, wife, age 28 - keeping house, b. Ohio
Howard B., age 3 - b. Ohio
John Seslie (or Leslie), age 1 - b. OhioThe 1880 Census lists the family:
Elwood F. Moore, age 41 - Farmer, b. Ohio, Father b. Ireland, Mother b. Virginia.
Samaria, age 38, had brochittis, b. Ohio, Father b. Virginia, Mother b. Canada.
Howard B., age 13 - Farm hand?, b. Ohio
John S. or L., age 11 - at school, b. Ohio
Willis E., age 5 - at school, b. Ohio
Loorina (Loorin A.) Barr (Baw) - age 19, b. Ohio, Father b. Md, Mother b. Virginia(this last may be a clue as to Samaria's maiden name)
Tried Howard's middle name "Bartley" for Samaria's maiden name and found her in IGI with all her family. From this I was able to trace back to Samaria's place of birth in Meigs Co., Ohio and there I found Elwood's father John and his mother Nancy with his siblings.
21. Samaria BARTLEY

Willis E., age 5 - at school, b. Ohio
Loorina (Loorin A.) Barr (Baw) - age 19, b. Ohio, Father b. Md, Mother b. Virginia(this last may be a clue as to Samaria's maiden name)
Found her tombstone inscription which gave her date of birth as 5 Jun 1842 and her death date as 31 Jul 1884.
Corresponded with another descendant of Elwood, through his second wife Mollie Bradfield, and she suggested I try Bartley (the middle name of Samaria's eldest son Howard) as a possibility for her maiden name. BINGO! I looked at the LDS Church's IGI Record files and found her (Samaria Bartely), her parents, and several siblings.
22. James WALKER
1880 Census of Steuben County, Lindly Town, New York supplies the following facts:
James Walker, age 35, Farmer, b. NY, father b. Ireland, mother b. Ireland
Mary A. Walker, age 31, keeping house, b. NY, father b. NY, mother b. NY
Nella I., age 12, at school, b. NY
Eliza, age 11, at school, b. NY
Virginia, age 9, at school, b. NY (my great grandmother)
Robert I., age 7, at school, b. NY
John R., age 6, at school, b. NY
Mary A., age 4, b. NY
Winefred, age 1, b. NY
Winfield, age 1, b. NYEvidently Winefred and Winfield are twins.
The 1870 Census only supplies one additional fact, that James was a laborer at that time, rather than a farmer (if that makes any difference).
Marriage Certificate dated 13 April, 1873 states that on that day he married Miss Mary A. Wall of Lindley, N.Y. They were married at Addison, N.Y. by Albert Wood, Rector of the Church of the Redeemer, Addison. Witnesses include Miss Addie Stanton, Miss Mary Price, and others. The wedding took place in the Eagle Hotel.
--------------------------------
The story my father, Joseph J. West, tells me is that during the Civil War, James was wounded in the neck by a bullet, or rifle ball. The bullet went completely through his neck and he somehow stuggled to get out of the battle and woke up in someone's barn in the South. My father claims that this barn was owned by one of our West relatives in either Virginia or North Carolina. Elwood stayed there in the barn for several days, nursing his wound with a dirty rag which he occasionally stuffed through the hole in his neck to clean it out. The wound eventually became infested with maggots which kept the wound from becoming infected. This story is partially verified by the pension record found in Lindleytown Pension Records, Certification No. 133,507 where James Walker received a gunshot wound in the right side of his neck (the Cause for Which he was Pensioned). His monthly pension rate was $6.00 and the Date of Origainal Allowance was May 1875.
Lindley Civil War Veterans, by John Mosher lists James as having served in the Civil War in Regiment 1, Pennsylvania Rifles, Company A. He enlisted on 11 June 1861 in Lindley. He was Wounded In Action at South Mountain, Virginia on 14 September 1862. Discharged for Disability (DFD) 4 March 1863. Re up 2d VetCav (whatever that means) Prisoner of War (POW).
There is also a record for a Robert Walker (see Robert's notes), and a Gilbert Walker. Gilbert served in Regiment 50, NY Engineers, Company M. He enlisted in Lindley on 4 January 1864. Nothing more is mentioned about him. I wonder if James had a brother named Gilbert or if Gilbert could be his cousin?

24. Edmund FOSGATE
According to the 1880 Census of Minnesota, Edward Fosgate was living in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota. He was 55 years old and born in New York. It also indicates that his father and mother were both born in New York. Also living with him were:
Name Relationship Age Birthplace
Carline Wife 48 New York
Elmer Son 19 Minnesota
Alice Daughter 16 Minnesota
Pearl Daughter 10 Minnesota
Jay (my great grandfather) Son 7 Minnesota
Grace Daughter 4 Minnesota
----------------------------------------------------------------------------Another Fosgate was also found, perhaps related to Edward (brother?).
Name Relationship Age Birthplace
Clark Fosgate 36 New York
Sarah E. Wife 28 Prov. Quebec
Clark R. Son 1 Wisconsin
Rose E. Sembrook Step Daughter 7 Wisconsin
Manilla Sembrook Step Daughter 5 Wisconsin
John Sembrook Step Son 3 Wisconsin
According to the 1880 Census of Minnesota, Carline Fosgate was living in Redwood Falls, Redwood County, Minnesota. She was 48 years old and born in New York. It also indicates that her father and mother were both born in New York. Also living with her were her husband, Edward, age 55 (he was a farmer). In addition Edward and Carline had the following issue:
Name Relationship Age Birthplace
Elmer Son 19 Minnesota
Alice Daughter 16 Minnesota
Pearl Daughter 10 Minnesota
Jay (my great grandfather) Son 7 Minnesota
Grace Daughter 4 Minnesota-----------------------------------------
Found a Caroline C. Goodrich in the 1850 Census. She was a student attending Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She gave her age as 21 years old, and born in Massachusetts. I'm not sure if this is my gg grandmother or not. Age isn't quite right, and place of birth wrong. But it's consistant with all the other records I've found for her family, in that none of them agree with any others.
-----------------------------------------
Found another Caroline Goodrich who married a Moses A. Wescott on June 4, 1851 at Milford, NY.
-----------------------------------------
Found Caroline's probate record in Redwood Falls, MN. It gives her death date as a pencelled in addition to the record as Sep. 5, 1901. It also lists 9 of her 12 children. Absent are: Lara, Pearl, and Jean. I can't help wondering why they weren't part of the inheritance?
Also found the death record for Caroline's brother Simeon Stevens Goodrich. It gives his father's name as ????n (probably Allen) Goodrich and Elizabeth Stevens.
Daniel L. Rhodes owned a farm in Mendocino County, California in 1900. He worked the farm with his son James L.?, and son-in-law Jay B. Fosgate. Jay was married to his daughter, Georgia A. Rhodes and they had two sons: Earl W. Fosgate (my grandfather - age 3), and Raymond G.? Fosgate (age 2), and a daughter Alice B. Fosgate (age 7 months). Daniel's wife, Mary Ann (Rhoads) (Copple) died in 1894. Daniel claimed that he was 67 at the time of that census. That means he would have been born in 1833. The 1880 census records that he claimed to be 45 at the time of that census. That means he would have been born in 1835.
The 1880 census also says that Daniel was a loborer and Mary was a house keeper. Evidently they only had 2 children, that lived at least. It shows that he had several people living with him at that time:
Name Relationship Age Birthplace
Mary A. Wife 43 Indiana
Georgie A. Daughter 4 California
James L. Son 5 mos. CaliforniaMargret E. Copple Niece 19 Missouri
William H. Copple Nephew 16 Missouri
Celia Jane Copple Niece 11 MissouriBased on the fact that the nieces and nephew were named Copple, I thought that it indicated that Mary A.'s maiden name was Copple, but I found her in the 1870 Census of Grant Twp., Nodaway Co., Missouri, married to Samuel Copple. While in the Family History Library looking I found on the IGI a record of her marriage to Daniel L. Rhodes on 22 May 1873 in Nodaway Co., Missouri. So, I looked in the 1870 Census of that area to try to find Daniel. I couldn't find him, but "accidently", or was it by devine intervention, I found her. The record was very hard to read, but I found a viewer that brought her record out very clearly. She was listed as being married to Samuel Copple and the nieces and nephews listed above were there listed as their son and 2 daughters.
I quickly looked up her marriage record to Samuel Copple to find out her maiden name. It was there in Nodaway Co., MO. She and Samuel were married on May 24, 1860 and her maiden name was Rhoads!!!
Now, I can understand why the three children were listed as nieces and nephew. Daniel was evidently a close relative, perhaps a cousin.
In GenForum, I found a fellow researcher who had responded to my query for Mary Copple. He told me he had found a Mary Ann Rhodes, b. Putnam Co., Indiana, who married a Samuel Copple, b. 9/12/1833 in Putnam Co., Indiana, and they married in 1860. I found the marriage record for verification.
This same person later sent me the lineage of Samuel Copple and another sent me the lineage of Mary Ann Rhoads. They merge a couple of generations back. Samuel was a first cousin of Mary Ann's.
Big clue! I recieved via email from a woman named Frances the following:
Paul, I found your Daniel L. Rhodes in the Great Register, Mendocino County, 1898, with the following information:No. 3927
Rhodes, Daniel Lambert
Age, 58
Ht., 5 ft. 9 1/2 in.
Dark complexion, black eyes, gray hair
scar on left thumb
Born, Indiana
Residence, Hopland
Date of Registeration, 28 Nov. 1891That info places his birth date as 1833.
I went to the Family History Library and found several entries in the Great Register of Mendocino Co. I found him as early as 1867. That means he was residing in California when Samuel Copple died and he went back to Missouri to marry Mary Ann. I also found a Jacob Rhoads residing in the same county. I wonder if they were related, perhaps brothers. Jacob was a Farmer. It's interesting that when Jacob died, about 1878 or so, Daniel went from being a laborer to a Farmer.
Another researcher noted that in a book titled "Rhoades and Allied Families - Decendants of David and Celia (Copple) Rhoades" by Alvin L. Anderson. Evidently in this book, Mr. Anderson has researched my Rhoades and Copple lines and found that there was a lot of intermarriage between these families. It also mentions that Daniel L. Rhoads' father was probably Absalom Rhoads and his mother was Mary (Polly) Copple, Celia's sister. If true, that would make Daniel and Mary Ann first cousins. Their children are:
David
Daniel
Jacob
SanfordI found evidence of Absalom and Jacob in Weaverville, El Dorado Co., California in 1850 (assuming that this is them). It says Absalom was born in North Carolina and Jacob in Indiana. According to Daniel's 1880 census he says his father and mother were born in Pennsylvania, so there's a question here.
I also found Daniel in Union, Humboldt Co., California in 1860.
-----------------------------------------
Biographical Sketch, so far (12/11/2000)
Daniel Lambert Rhoads was born probably in April 1835. Various records I have vary by about two to three years in both directions (1833 - 1838). From all indications he was born somewhere in Indiana.
Some time ago I found a record of a family in Indiana who might be his. In the 1850 Census of White River Twp, Randolph Co., Indiana there is a Daniel Rhoads (age 15) who is the son of Thomas Rhoads. This Daniel is about the right age, but in the 1880 and 1900 census records, my Daniel indicates that his parents were either born in Indiana or Pennsylvania, whereas the Thomas and Elizabeth Rhoads shown in the 1950 Indiana census were born in North Carolina and Ohio respectively. So there's a big cloud on this record until I can find something more conclusive.
I looked into this Thomas Rhoads a little more and could find nothing more about his son Daniel. I did however, find his marriage record. Thomas Rhoads married Hannah Freeman on 22 November 1828 in Randolph Co., Indiana.
Another researcher told me of a book entitled "Rhoades and Allied Families - Descendants of David and Celia (Copple) Rhoades" by Alvin L. Anderson. Evidently in this book, Mr. Anderson has researched my Rhoades and Copple lines and found that there were a lot of intermarriages between these families. It also mentions that Daniel L. Rhoads' father was probably Absalom Rhoads and his mother was Mary (Polly) Copple, Celia's sister. If that is
true, that would make Daniel and Mary Ann first cousins twice, as Celia (Copple) Rhoads is Mary Ann's mother, and Absalom was her cousin. Sounds like a convoluted family if I ever saw one. Absalom and Polly evidently had (at least) four children: David, Daniel, Jacob, and Sanford.I found an Absalom and Jacob Rhodes in Weaverville, El Dorado Co., California in the 1850 Census (assuming that this is them). It says Absalom was born in North Carolina and Jacob in Indiana, which sort of fits.
The next record I have for Daniel is the 1860 Census of Union Twp., Humboldt Co., CA where he is listed as 23 years old, a laborer, living with several other men working on a farm owned by Patrick and Michael Riley.
The next record I have for him is in 1961 when he applied for a patent of land. In the Homestead Book #1, there is a recording for Daniel L. Rhoads. It gave a description of the land the "homesteaded" in the twp of Anderson, near "Rhoads River", and it was recorded April 17, 1861. Here is the interesting part, it stated in this record that he was married to Mary A. Rhoads!!! However, he could not have been married to her that early. She was married to Samuel Copple in 1860 in Nodaway Co., Missouri and Samuel didn't die until at least 1869.
There is a big gap in Daniel's records between 1861 and 1867 when I found his voter registration in the Great Register of Mendocino County. Then there is another gap until 1873 when Daniel and Mary Ann were married on 2 Apr 1873, in Nodaway Co., MO. I still have not been able to find a census record for Daniel in 1870, though the census record of Nodaway County indicates that Samuel Copple was still alive. I can't help wondering if Mary Ann was hiding the fact that the man she was living with wasn't her husband, but possibly Daniel Rhoads? Just a thought.
I don't think Daniel and Mary Ann moved back to California until 1876. I don't know that for sure, just speculation based on some spurious info I received once.
Then, from the early 1870s through the 1880s Daniel patented land in Sanel, Mendocino County, and he and Mary Ann had two children: Georgia A. and James L. Mary Ann already had three children by Samuel Copple: Margaret E., William Harrison, and Celia Jane. An interesting note. In the 1880 census, these three children of Mary Ann are listed as Daniel's nieces and nephew, giving some credence to the idea that Daniel and Mary Ann were at least closely related. Also, I didn't mention above, but Samuel Copple, her first husband was Mary Ann's third (I think) cousin too.
Georgia A. Rhoads married my g grandfather Jay Derward Fosgate and died in 1902 after bearing three children. My mother says she died in childbirth. Mary Ann died on May 12, 1894. According to her grave stone, she was aged 59 years, 1 mo., 7 days. I have no idea of what happened to James L. Rhoads. I also have no idea of what happened to Daniel. There is some reason to believe he was still alive as late as 1916 as there were some land transactions that took place around that time which I understand he signed, though I wonder if it was really him. I don't think he could read or write.
27. Mary Ann RHOADES
Evidently, Daniel's wife was deceased as she does not show up on the 1900 census.

Emigrated to America with his family in 1868 on the Ship Colorado. Was outfitted with a wagon by the LDS Church's Perpetual Emigration Fund that same year.
