32. Joshua WEST III

1830 Census of Currituck Co., NC indicates that Joshua West was between 40 to 50, had 1 son under 5 years old, one son over 10 years old, two daughters under 5, and his wife between 30 to 40.

The 1840 Census shows Milby or Mibby West (probably short for Milburry - Joshua was dead by then). She had 2 sons between 20 to 30, 2 daughters between 20 to 30 and she was between 40 to 50. (I can't be certain, but I think this is my family. Ages of children are about right but not exact.)

---------------------------------

State Records of N.C. by Clark Census 1790 "Heads of Families" names a Joshua West in Currituck Co., N.C. in 1790. He had 1 son and 2 daughters at that time. This must have reference to Joshua Jr, the father of this Joshua. In 1790 this Joshua (II) would have been only 15 to 16 years old which fits the description.

Another bit of confusion. Joshua West married Elizabeth Leggitt on August 23, 1799 - Bertie County. This appears to be Joshua III but may not be any of my Joshuas.

-- Records from my great aunt Miriam West --

In the War of 1812, there is a Joshua T. West Jr. listed as an officer in the U.S. Army. He was a Quartermaster. (This could have been this Joshua as his son Joshua T. wasn't born until 1818. That could mean that his middle initial was also "T" which may add to the confusion.)

--------------------------

If Joshua West III was born in 1779 and his son Joshua T. was born in 1818, he had to be about 39 years old when his son was born.

--------------------------

Will of Joshua West (III), Currituck County, North Carolina, dated June 21, 1832 and proved 5 March, 1835.
In his will Joshua Jr. mentions sons Joshua (T.) & Benjamin. He mentions his wife, but does not give her name. He also mentions daughters Katy and Phobe

33. Milbury DOZIER

Currituck County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes

N.C. State Archives Microfilm Reel #C.030.30001 (continuation of reel)

Ordered that Thomas Marchant, Malachi Read, John Hill audit and settle the accts. of John Dauge in right of his wife Milbury who was exectrix on the estate of Benjamin Dauge decd. with said decd. estate & make return &c.

(I'm not sure what this means but it opens a possibility that Milbury (Sorey) Dauge, widow of Benjamin Dauge, evidently remarried to John Dauge (Benjamine's brother???). If that is so, then it may be possible that this Milbury Dauge, wife of John Dauge, could be the mother of my Milbury Dauge wife of Joshua West III

34. James WIGINGTON

From Records from the West Family Bible by Joseph Simeon West:

Robert and Elizabeth Wigington begat James Wigington. James Wigington married Frances Whitehead and they begat Sarah Frances Wigington.

Wigington Family:
Great Grandfather Wigington was an Englishman. He married sister of William Jones' mother who was probably named Bennett.
Grandfather James Wigington was born about 1786. He married:
1st. Polly Porner??? Oct 15, 1805
2nd. Frances Whitehead Jan 6, 1816
3rd. Milberry Drake August 10, 1820
4th. Chloe Harmers??? in first part of 1844

He had 8 sons: (William and Robert), Richard, (John, James H., John, Willoughby L., & Samuel). And 9 daughters: (Nancy) (Sarah Frances) Elizabeth, Patsy, Mariah, Milberry, Ann, Mary J. and Martha Ann.

He died Feb 26, 1844.

35. Frances WHITEHEAD

Records from the West Family Bible of Joseph Simeon West:

Robert and Elizabeth Wigington begat James Wigington. James Wigington married Frances Whitehead and they begat Sarah Frances Wigington.

Sarah Frances daughter of James & Frances Wigington born Oct 30, 1816.

James remarried in 1820 to Milberry Drake. I suspect she was more a mother to Sarah, as she probably never knew, or remembered her real mother, if the reason for the separation between her father and her mother was death.

40. John MOORE

Found tombstone inscription for John MOORE. He was buried in the Shipment Cemetary, Scipio, Meigs Co., Ohio. It states: John MOORE, d. March 19, 1850, 53 years, 29 days.

Ancestral File has a record for him done by another researcher. It states John MOORE was born on 20 Oct 1797 in Ireland. He was married on 17 Oct 1822 to Nancy FOREMAN, in Harrison Co., Ohio. John died on 19 Nov. 1850 in Meigs Co., Ohio. Nancy was b. 1 Aug 1803 in Virginia. It doesn't have a death date for her. Nancy's parents are William FOREMAN, b. 28 Jul 1774 in VA. He was married in about 1800 to Sarah ????. He died on 6 Jun 1845 in Harrison Co., Ohio. Sarah was b. 6 May 1779 in VA, and d. on 13 Sep 1864.

IGI Records confirm this with a marriage record for John MOORE and Nancy FOREMAN. They were married on 27 Oct. 1822 in Harrison Co., Ohio.

There is also an IGI Record for a John Moore, b. abt. 1797 of Ireland. If this is my John, his parents are Robert MOORE and Margaret ARMSTRONG. IGI also has records for three other children of this family:

Samuel MOORE, b. abt 1797, of Ireland
Robert MOORE, b. abt 1797, of Ireland
William MOORE, b. abt 1797, of Ireland

It's interesting that John had sons named for each of these possible siblings except Robert, but Robert's father is a Robert, if that means anything.

-------------------------------------

Another Tombstone Inscription, near John's is for Giles E. MOORE, d. Sep 19, 1856, 1 year, 2 mos, 8 days, w/o of Wm & Amanda MOORE. I strongly suspect this may be John's grandson, the son of John's eldest son William. Need to find out if William's wife was named Amanda.

41. Nancy FOREMAN

44. Henry WALKER

From notes by JoAnn O'Brien:

Henry was born ca 1815 in Galway, Ireland. This is from the 1865 Census of Steuben Co., NY. From Death Notices from Steuben County Newspapers, 1797-1884, he died 23 Oct. 1883 in Lindley.

According to census record notations, Henry Sr. worked on the RR and was a farmer. The family was in Ireland as late as 1840, in Albany NY by 1844, and in Steuben Co. by 1850.

45. Jane BURKE

From notes by JoAnn O'Brien:

Jane BURKE (maiden name taken from Winifred's death certificate) was born in Roscommon, Ireland, according to the 1865 census of Steuben Co., NY. Accorrding tot he cemetery book at the Steuben Co. courthouse she was born 25 December 1813 and died 28 November 1879. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Steuben Co. The stone is a tall, four-sided one. Jane's inscription reads: Jane Walker nee Burke wife of Henry Walker Sr. died Nov. 28 1879 aged 65 y'rs, 11 m's, & 3 d's. The name "Gilbert is legible on the reverse of Jane's inscription. There have been inscriptions on the other two sides of the stone, also, but in 1887, they weren't legible. I imagine one is probably Henry, Sr.

According to the 1865 census, Jane had given birth to eight children by then. Gilbert is likely one of them since his name was on her grave stone.

-------------------------

From Paul West:

With Gilbert, Henry Jr., Robert, James, and Mary J., and Winifred we still need two more children.

46. James WALL

James is listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses of Lindley Township, Steuben Co., New York. The 1850 & 1860 census also lists his daughter Mary Wall, my gg grandmother. James is my ggg grandfather and his wife Mary is my ggg grandmother.

1850 Census, P. 73a, ln. 10 (August 27, 1850)

James Wall 30 Nane(?) ------ New York

The 1860 Census, P. 350, Ln 24

James Wall 39 Teamster ----- ----- New York

Charles 18New York
Cleopatra 15New York

Arabelle 10New York

James Jr. 6New York
Morris 3New York
Ellen 1New York

1870 Census, P. 363b, Ln 23

Walls, James 50 Farmer 400 300 New York
, Mary E. 49 Keeping House New Jersey
, James 16New York
, Charles 4New York

I can gather from all the above that ggg grandfather James Wall was born in New York around 1820/21. He married Mary ???? (b. 1821/22 in New Jersey) sometime around 1839. He worked as a teamster until sometime between 1860 and 1870 when he was able to purchase a small farm. He and Mary had eleven children, some of which may have died young.

His daughter Mary A. (my gg grandmother) was born around 1847/48 (???). Since she is not listed in the 1870 census, and didn't get married until 1873, she was likely away at school, or found a job in some other town.

It is interesting to note that the Walkers lived close by, perhaps on the same block, or next block over. I wonder if Mary Wall and James Walker were childhood sweethearts?

James is listed in the Lindley Civil War Veterans, by John Mosher. He served in Regiment 50, NY Engineers, Company F. He enlisted in Lindley on 22 August 1862.

(Could this be James Wall's brother???)
In that record there is also a record for a Charles B. Wall, Cpl. He served with Regiment 86, NY Infantry, Company F. He enlisted in Lindley on 14 September 1861. He was buried in Lindley. He Died In Service (DIS)-Camp Good Hope MD, typhoid.

54. David RHODES

The 1850 Census of Nodaway Co., Missouri shows the following. I can't be certain this is the family of Mary Ann Rhodes (my gg grandmother) or not. One possible descrepancy is that David and Selah Rhoads are listed here as being born in Indiana, but somehow I had the impression that Mary Ann Rhodes father and mother were born in Pennsylvania. I need to verify this.

If this information is about my family, Mary Ann Rhodes was b. in 1835/36 in Indiana. She moved to Missouri between the ages of 5 and 8 (1841 - 1844) about the same time as the Mormons were being evicted and executed in Jackson Co., MO.
