1800 Census of Currituck Co., NC, P. 288 near bottom of page:
Joshua West, over 45 years old. Had one son 10-16 years, one son 16-26 years, one daughter 10-16 years, and wife was 26-45 years. This fits as Courtney was likely married by this time to Solomon Wallis. From this we can approximate the ages of everyone to within 5-10 years.---------------------------------
Wife's name was Sarah, or Sara Cowell (Sally).
State records of North Carolina by Clark, Census of 1790 Heads of Families Page 475, names Joshua West in Currituck County, North Carolina in 1790. He had one son and two daughters at that time. -- (This probably pertains to his son Joshua III who was 15 at the time, and Courtney and Sarah - or Sally.)

He could have fought in the Revolutionary War. His son Joshua III wasn't born until 1779.

1780 Currituck Co.: Orphan Docket, P. 18. Mentions a Lurania and Lydia West as orphans, and Joshua West as their guardian.
65. Sarah COWELL
Will of Sarah West, State of North Carolina, Currituck County, 19 October, 1809. According to her will, her name is Sarah. In her will she mentions son Joshua to whom she gave one dollar. She also mentions daughter Sarah Hill and Courtney Wallis, the wife of Soloman Wallis. She also mentions James Cowell and the will is testified by Betsey Cowell. These may be her brother and sister or some other relative since her maiden name was Cowell.
I found a James and Elizabeth Cowell in the 1850 Census of Mouyock Dist., Currituck County, NC, p. 368, line 6. It shows James as 74 and Elizabeth (Betsy) as 65. That would mean James was born abt 1776, making him about the right age to be Sarah Cowell's nephew. If this is the same James mentioned in her will, he was about 18 years her junior.
68. Robert WIGINGTON
West Family Bible indicates that Robert & Elizabeth Wigington begat James Wigington. James Wigington married Frances Whitehead and they begat Sarah Frances Wigington.
Wigington Family:
Great Grandfather Wigington (of Joseph Simeon West) was an Englishman. He married sister of William Jones' mother who was probably named Bennett.
West Family Bible indicates that Elizabeth was married to Robert Wigington and begat James Wigington who married Frances Whitehead and they begat Sarah Frances Wigington.

Not sure if this is Francis Whitehead's father or not. Just a note in Aunt Mirriam's notes about a will of Joseph Whitehead, dated Feb. 24, 1778. Time frame is about right.

Church Family Files say he was born in Germany, but personal records of Kay Jerry Hawks say he was born in Maryland. Not sure which is correct.
