[NI02036] ref: Kath Liddell ([email protected]), from Royal Artillery Historical Trust: 1856, No 2572 Edward Hovell Thurlow Age when commissioned - 17 yrs 5 mths Gentleman Cadet - 15 November 1853 Lieutenant - 21 June 1856 2nd Captain - 6 July 1867 Captain - 5 July 1872 Major - 8 September 1875 Remarks - Retired on a gratuity 1 January 1879 - Malta, Aug 57 - Jul 60; India, Aug 65 - Dec 66; Gibraltar, Dec 75 - Jun 77 Also: My mother has, in her possession, a silver teapot, whose history is not known, ... This teapot bears the inscription: " To Qr. Mr. Sergt. Francis Young R. A. from Major E. H. Thurlow Jany. 1879 " Francis Young was my mother's great uncle (elder brother of her maternalgrandfather), born in North Shields, Northumberland in 1841; he was known to have served in the army, including the Boer War. He remained unmarried and we don't know when he died, but maybe about 1920 in Newcastle upon Tyne (record not found).
