El Carmelo Cemetery, on Asilomar Drive by the sea in Pacific Grove, was started by the Methodist Church near the end of the 19th Century. It still retains a section for Methodists only. Pacific Grove was originally a Methodist campground, which maintained blue laws, including a non-alcohol status, until the 1960's.
This is a lovely cemetery with some extremely large cypress trees and several families of resident mule deer grazing on the lawns.
I am in the process of transcribing tombstone information only from the older headstones. This information will be entered on this page as time allows. No attempt has been made to add to or correct the inscriptions, or search out city-held information for unmarked graves
