U.S. Social Security Death Index is available online. The U.S. Social Security Death Index contains information about persons whose deaths were reported to the Social Security Administration from about 1937 through September 30, 2000. the majority of the death records are from 1962 and later. This file provides birth and death dates and identifies the person's last place of residence and the place the death payment was sent. The Social Security number and the state of residence when the Social Security number was issued are also provided. This index contains approximately 64 million records. 20

to help patrons identify their ancestors.
