Bill, Yes, we are both speaking about the same Andrew Mulholland husband of
Christina Keller.
My husband, Kenneth Jackson Mulholland and I made a trip to Minn in 1998 and again
last year. We have researched quite a lot and found many relatives. I do have a
couple things you might like to check on.
I looked you up on my family tree and found you and your wife and children. I see
you are descended from Riley Henry Mulholland. The dates you have are the same as
mine, but one thing stands out as perhaps worthy of further investigation. According
to my records Andrew and Christina came to Viola, MN in 1865 to make their home. He
and his family are listed in the 1860 census of Hamilton Co., New York. Andrew
enlisted in the Union Army 4 Jan. 1864 and served until 10 Feb. 1865. He was a
private in Co., B, 2nd Regiment of New York Heavy Artillery. My point is that I
believe Riley Henry Mulholland was actually born in NY not MN. James W., Abram F.
Mary M. and Andrew J. were also born in NY. The children born in Viola were: Robert
A., Cecil Eugene, and Cora Adaline. I noticed you didn't have Cecil listed and I've
met a lot of his descendants in MN.
Most of what I know about your wife's family came from a chart I received from Bea
Rae Kroke in 1998 when we met in MN. I would like to know more about you. Where were
you born? Have any of your 3 children married? Please let me know what kind of info
you would like from me. We are descended from Andrew J. Mulholland and Carrie
Newsham. Their son Kenneth Tarryington Mulholland married Gertrude E. Hemshrot and
had a son Neil Kenneth Mulholland who is my husband's father. Wilma Mulholland

Hi Bill, Wilma's husband and I are first cousins and both working on the
Mulhollands. Yes this is our Andrew and family. We are descended from
Andrew J. I have not double checked our files against your info.... only
notice one difference... Cora.
Do you have any information on Andrew's brother James and family. We don't
have much at all on them. Still stuck on maiden name for Andrew and James
mother: Elizabeth. Still incomplete names for Christina Keller's parents.

I got a message from Wilma Mulholland this morning that she has been in touch
with you.
I'm afraid we have a tough nut to crack getting information on Daniel. I
understand that Mulholland is a very common name in Ireland, and without
Elizabeth's maiden name......
It has occurred to Wilma, and me that Elizabeth was a bit old to be the
mother of James and Andrew. What if she was the grandmother or aunt, and
raised them as her own? Now it may be that she had many more children before
them. Sure wish we had access to those wonderful UK records, an 1820 Census
in Armaugh, an 1830 and 1840 census in Quebec, a ship manifest to Canada, a
Canadian immigration record. I wish the library in St Paul/Minneapolis was
right next door... I would be looking at every newspaper on file for a social
article or obit on Elizabeth. Thanks for responding. Lynda LeMay

Bill, Wilma and husband Ken Mulholland live in LaHabra California. My
husband Mike and I live in Highland California (near San Bernardino). My
mother and sister live with us. Ken descends from Neil, brother of my mother
Phyllis. The parents of Neil, Phyllis, and Carole were Kenneth Terrington
Mulholland and Gertrude Hemshrot. Kenneth T. was son of Andrew Jackson
Mulholland and Carrie E. Newsham. "A.J." was son of Andrew and Christina.
Neil is in very poor health, but Carole (Dolly) and my mother are doing very
well. Mom will be 83 in May.
I just got my Mac computer in Dec. 1999 and very slowly learning how to do
"stuff". I am good at internet search, but have no organizing program such
as Family Tree Maker, so other than posting obits, wills, and messages to
Rootsweb, FamilyHistory, etc., I feel inept to the task of setting up a
webpage. But you are right, it would be really helpful to everyone. Wilma
has Family Tree Maker and produces the descendancy charts etc. for the two of
us. Wilma and I regularly share info. We have also been in contact with
Joni Mulholland who lives in the Viola area. Joni is not currently working
on genealogy....she is busy setting up her own business. Wilma has had
contact with Bea Kroke and others. I have had limited contact with Glenn
Mulholland through a friend of his, and Jan Brusted.
So here we all are....cousins working on the same thing and stuck at the same
place. The descendants of Andrew and Christina are fairly complete although
we have very little on James wife Belle O'Leary, and not much on Catherine
Cartner.
Wish we had more on the brother of the senior Andrew, i.e. James C. We
have his dates and where he is buried. I have found him and his wife Mary
Houghton in the History of Hamilton Co., but very sketchy information on
their descendants. One of them married a Perkl and there are several of that
family in the area. I have a picture of one of them with the family. I
have the faint hope that one of his descendants has information on Daniel and
Elizabeth. Would love to have a picture of James and Mary.
I would be happy to send you a copy of everything on the Mulhollands,
including pictures. Wilma sent me a good picture of Andrew and another of
the children of Andrew and Christina.
Bill Brennan, husband of Barbara Mulholland, gave me his edition of The
History of Olmsted County which has some biographical sketches on the
Mulhollands. He also gave my mother many old pictures. Abram and to some
degree Cecil look a bit like Andrew. The rest of the children really took
after Christina Keller. Now as to names: Well, Andrew and James were
repeated. Christina had a brother Abram, so I think Abram Mulholland was
named for him. The rest of them....just don't know.
That brings me to another mystery. Christina's parents. blank Keller
married to Margret blank. That is the pits....being stuck on Andrew's
parents and Christina's. I was able to find Margret on a NY Census with her
second husband Elisha III Bissell. Also shown on that census is Christina
Keller age 16 and Martha J. Bissell age 9. Wilma and I have been working
with Terry Welter on the Keller line. If you are interested, I can give you
some information on that. Regards, Lynda LeMay

I was listing the children under Andrew and Christina, so yes James, the son
of Andrew and Christina. His wife was Belle O'Leary. Robert's wife was
Catherine Cartner.
...
Been thinking about names....James C. (the senior James) Wonder if the C
is for Cecil. James C.'s brother Andrew (the senior) named one son Cecil.
Note that Andrew and Christina named their oldest son James W. I'm leaning
to William for the W. Lynda

I was born in Viola, Minnesota, but it hardly counts as I've been in
Southern California for 52 years, and 2 years in New Mexico. Lynda

Bill, I've given the reasoning behind the move from Ireland some thought.
My husband's expertise is immigration. He says that the famine began earlier
than when we think.
So here are my thoughts:
1. Husband dies.
2. Making a living is becoming more and more difficult.....food shortages etc.
3. Other family members have moved here or came with Elizabeth and sons.
- We don't know how Daniel died or even if he got shipped to Australia.
- We don't know if there were other children before James and Andrew, and if
they died or were left with other relatives; or were of age, and did not care
to move. If there were no other children before James and Andrew, I really
question that Elizabeth is the mother. I know at least two friends who are
in the role of mother and are called Mom by the children, but in fact each is
the grandmother.
- We don't know for a certainty that Elizabeth and sons came in 1835....no
official record like a ships manifest/passenger list has been found yet.
- We only know approximately when the family moved to New York from Canada.
- We do not know for a certainty that they lived in Montreal, Quebec.
I don't know about Wilma, but I am unwilling to pay a researcher in Ireland
quite yet.....not until I have exhausted all available research here. The
fun for me is the search and find....the detective work, and I particularly
enjoy the search back into the ancestors. Additionally, a researcher would
have a difficult time at this time for lack of information and the names are
so common. I wish just one of our trio had been given a weird name.
Mike and I plan a trip to Montreal Quebec this summer mainly for a 350 year
reunion of LeMay family, but also to check Canadian records for our
Elizabeth, James, and Andrew. I have not yet had time to go to the Mormon
library here in town and there are a few leads (?) I need to check on.
Nothing in the data on Ancestry.com or Rootsweb.com or any other internet
source seems to match up with our trio. All we have is tombstones,
references from older generations to family bible information, obituaries on
James and Andrew...none giving the answers we seek. I believe Wilma has
contacted someone descended from nearly every child of Andrew and Christina
and although she has gotten a tremendous amount of data on the descendants,
no one seems to have proof or even knowledge of Elizabeth's maiden name, any
of her relatives, the town in County Armagh, nor of their life in Canada.
We have both been given false leads by some of our older generation. For
instance, Andrew Jackson Mulholland told my mother that he was a "pig from
county Cork", when in fact he was not born in Ireland at all, AND his parents
came from County Armagh which is in a different country from County Cork.
Uncle Neil told my sister that they had American Indian blood. No clue about
that at all. I'm sure Wilma has similar stories.
More and more is added to the internet. The ships transcribers are doing a
wonderful job, but it takes a lot of time. I need to make another trip or
two to Minnesota and spend some real time there. I can see at least 4 trips
to New York on the horizon.
Anyhow, I really appreciate your efforts, help, and input. Maybe someone
will see the postings on the webpage and give a really good lead. It does
happen. In fact, a very distant cousin had her message posted for two years
when Wilma and I both answered it. We now have that family surname
(Polikowsky) back to Poland and Germany. Wilma's research in Minnesota has
led us to another very nearly completed surname (Hemschrot) back to Germany.
Another contact is working with me on siblings of the first ancestor over
here. Lynda

"It Was Loaded. Viola Boy Shop in the Face by His Older Brother"
Special to The Bulletin. Viola, Minn., Sept. 4 - The muffled report of an
explosion followed by sharp screams startled the citizens of Viola at the
noon hour yesterday, and they hastily proceeded to ascertain the cause.
It was found that Howard, son of R A. Mulholland, had fired a shot gun into
the face of his younger brother, Stanley. The frightened child with the
blood streaming from his face started at once for the doctors' office and
presented a pitiable sight as he ran down the street. His hands were clasped
to his head and he screamed piteously with pain and fright.
Charles Purves grasped the little sufferer and carried him to the office of
Drs. Howard and Nelson where he was given the best of attention. His face
and eyes are swollen and badly scorched with powder, but fortunately the
deadly load has been taken from the cartridge and thus the lad's life was
spared.
Howard and Stanley Mulholland are brothers aged respectively twelve and eight
years. While they were playing at home, Howard seized a short gun and placed
in it a cartridge, which on account of its lightness was supposed to be
empty. At first he was satisfied to point the gun at his pet bantams
pretending to be out hunting prairie chickens.
Then he drew the barrel around so as to cover his brother Stanley. Believing
the cartridge to be perfectly empty Howard pulled the trigger. The loud
report which followed nearly deafened those in the room. The "empty"
cartridge had contained the regular amount of powder, the bb shot having been
removed by Howard a year ago for his air rifle. The charge of powder,
however, struck the young victim in the face and on his right hand which he
had involuntarily thrown up to protect himself. The end of the barrel was
scarcely four feet away from Stanley's face when the explosion took place.
The older brother was overcome with remorse at what he had done by his
carless act and sobbed bitterly as he witnessed Master Stanley's sufferings.
With the effective treatment which Drs. Howard and Nelson are giving, the
wounded boy will recover in time. It is extremely probable that Howard
Mulholland will never again be guilty of pointing a gun at any one. It is
very fortunate that his brother's life was not sacrificed while he was
learning this lesson."

the funeral were A. J. Pirkl, and Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Mulholland of Rochester.
James Mulholland was born in N. Ireland in 1827. When young he came with his
mother and one brother to Montreal, Canada. His father died prior to this time.
He grew of manhood in Montreal and learned his trade, that of a blacksmith.
They then moved to Long Lake N. Y. In November 1859, he was married to Miss Mary
Houghton and remained in New York until 1865, when, with his family, he came to
Viola MN where he has since resided with the exception of a few years spent in
Michigan. He is survived by four children: Mrs. E. H. Hartman of Nebraska
??? Of Iowa, and Mrs. A. J. Pirkl and D. W. Mulholland, both of St. Paul. The
three years just was spent at the home of his daughter Mrs. Pirkl where he died
April 88, 1911, aged 84 years 2 months and 11 days old."
Throughout this email Joni spelled it Pirkle.....which I believe is incorrect.
Also she showed James died April 88, 1911....an error, but I don't know if it
should be 8, 18, or 28. I would want to see the article to recheck all
information. I don't know quite what the Nebraska???Of Iowa is either.
I'll keep watching for another possible email of this obit. Lynda

SSDI shows Carrie Mulholland b. 12-12-1868 which is at odds with every other document.
Lots of Mulhollands in Minnesota and in Olmsted, but can't connect them as
yet. Have to be careful as some apparently are not ours. There is, for
instance, a John C. Mulholland in the History of the Gopher Count in Viola
who has not proven to be ours, and yet he is there when the Mulhollands were
there in mid 1800s. Lynda

Bill, will send the pic of Robert A.
Still have not determined difference between James W. and Abram F.
I'll keep checking...seems like I have something.
I'll have to search through the Keller folder for Christina's obit.
By the way, I knew about her brother James from some of the older relatives
years ago...like Alice Molda and Erma Bishop, but did not know about any
other siblings. Then I sent to Selco Library Olmsted Co.....over the
internet.....for a probate on Abram Keller. Just took a chance. Lucked out.
It listed a bequest to sisters Christina Mulholland, and Catherine Smith,
and brother James. Catherine Smith had signed her note Long Lake NY. It was
a message on one of the boards from Terry Welter that led to Catherine's
children's names. So I have quite a bit on the families of the Keller
siblings. Terry had made a trip to NY and had a picture of Catherine's
headstone and her husband's. Lynda

Bill, I have not found an obit for Elizabeth. Joni Mulholland sent me an
email 10/9/99. She went to the Court house and Andrew's death certificate
says parents Daniel and Lizzie. In an email dated 10/22/99, Joni said, "all
documentation that we have and familiar info has stated that both Andrew and
James were born in Ireland. The 1860 census list them as Canada but death
certificates and later census list Ireland." Lynda
