Richard Warren's English origins and ancestry have been the subject of much
speculation, and countless different ancestries have been published for him,
without a shred of evidence to support them. Luckily in December 2002, Edward
Davies discovered the missing piece of the puzzle. Researchers had long
known of the marriage of Richard Warren to Elizabeth Walker on 14 April 1610 at
Great Amwell, Hertford. Since we know the Mayflower passenger had a wife
named Elizabeth, and a first child born about 1610, this was a promising
record. But no children were found for this couple in the parish
registers, and no further evidence beyond the names and timing, until the will
of Augustine Walker was discovered. In the will of Augustine Walker,
dated April 1613, he mentions "my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of
Richard Warren", and "her three children Mary, Ann and
Sarah." We know that the Mayflower passenger's first three children
were named Mary, Ann, and Sarah (in that birth order).

The will of Anthony Snow of Marshfield dated 28 Dec 1685,
codicil dated 8 Aug 1692, sworn 3 Jan 1692/3, names wife Abigal; grandson James
Ford; son Josias Snow, daughters Lidia, Sarah and Alis (no surnames); dau,
Abigall's children; "daughter in law my son Josias wife";
grandchildren James, Hannah and Abigall Ford; brother Joseph Warren and friend
Capt. Nathaniel Thomas to be overseers. On 3 Jan 1692/3 Abigal Snow, widow of
Anthony Snow, swore to the inventory. The inventory was dated 12 Nov. 1692.
Marshfield A Town of Villages 1640-1990 by Krusell and Bates
Anthony Snow's will dated 8 Dec 1685 is in possession of the
Connecticut Historical Society at Hartford, CT. Anthony Snow was one of the last Marshfield
downtown settlers for whom Snow Road is named. He received one-half of the
Thomas Prence grant in 1649. The parcel included a part of Cedar Grove Cemetery
that Snow gave to the town and the swamp (Snow's Swamp) where much of the
shopping and parking areas are today. It also included land along Ocean Street
easterly as far at the Bourne grant (near Bourne Park Avenue) this flat land
between the rivers were meadows and streams, wetlands, and swamps. Anthony Snow
was a felt maker by trade. He farmed and fished, served as a constable and a
deputy to the court, contributed a barrel of beef toward the purchase of
Bulkley's parsonage and served as one of the town’s first selectmen on 5 Apr
1667. Many of downtown Marshfield businesses today are built on the land that
belong to Anthony Snow.

Abigail, when she married Anthony Snow of Plymouth, received as
a marriage portion from her mother, 9 Jan 1639, a deed for her "house
situated near the place called Wellingsley (alis) Hob’s Hole, with the eight
acres of land thereunto adjoining." Shortly after marriage Mr. Snow
removed to Marshfield, where he became one of the leading citizens of the town;
was surveyor of highways in 1651, constable 1652, representative to the General
Court of Plymouth Colony in 1656 and twenty years following, selectman in 1666
and afterwards several years, collector of the excise 3 June 1668, and member
of the Plymouth Council-of-War for Plymouth Colony in 1675. Sometime before his
death he gave to the town a piece of land near the meeting house for a grave
yard, where he is buried and which is still in use. His will dated 28 Dec 1685,
with codicil of 8 August 1692, named wife Abigail, and children given

Sandwich (MD 29:69) died 8 June 1710 Sandwich, son of James1 Skiffe
and Mary.
James Skiff, father of Stephen, was ancestor of all the colonial families
of this surname, is said to have come from London, England, and settled at
Plymouth, MA before 1636 where he received five acres of land for services done
to Isaac Allerton and bought five more acres of Peter Tilbot, 22 Aug 1636. He
later sold his house and land at Plymouth 1 Jan 1637 and moved to Lynn, MA. In
the same year 1637 he moved to Sandwich, MA where he lived the rest of his
life. In Sandwich he was admitted a freeman on 5 June 1644.

The will of Stephen2 Skiffe dated 7 May 1701 names his
"daughter Lydia Blackwell." The will of Michael1 Blackwell
made this eldest son of the deceased son, John2, principal
beneficiary, but the legacy was subject to provision that John2 Blackwell
failing to produce male issue, the property was to pass to Caleb2
Blackwell (if the latter survived and had male issue, which proved to be the
case). The will of John2 Blackwell dated in Sandwich 10 April 1734,
gives to "my wife Lydia Blackwell" use and improvement of all the
estate, "real and personal with free liberty to make sale & dispose as
she shall find necessary," and at the widow's death all to "my
beloved daughter Lydia Blackwell." wife Lydia sole exectrix. Witnesses:
Benjamin Fessenden, John Ellis, Abigail Gibbs. Sworn 6 Jan and proved 6 Feb
1741 (Barnstabel County Probate 6:191)
He left a considerable real property, including a farm in
Rochester valued at £900, the total real estate coming to £4,392 (ibid., p
331). Evidently John2 Blackwell made good use of his inherited
property during his life time. At his death his wife possessed a considerable
fortune, even though she was ejected from the lands, which under her
father-in-law's will reverted to Caleb3 Blackwell as next male heir.

1734, mentions wife Anne; son Shubael; daus. Lydia Skiff, Dorcas Burges and
Abigail Gibbs; "great-granddaughter, granddaughter of my daughter Mercy
Newcomb deceased, and daughter of William Newcomb of Sandwich, called Mercy'.
"two granddaguthers, daughters of my daughter (Remember) Jennings."

Cape Cod History
Among those who came early in the last century from Sandwich to settle
in Yarmouth was Elisha Bassett. His wife was Ruhamah Jennings, daughter of
Samuel Jennings of Sandwich, long the schoolmaster and town clerk of that town.
The Bassetts trace their pedigree to William Bassett, who came to Plymouth in
the Fortune, in 1621. Elisha Bassett lived at Nobscusset, in a house that stood
on the spot where Charles Hall now resides. He held a commission as captain
under the provincial government. This, however, did not hinder him from being
an ardent patriot when the struggle commenced between the colonies and the
crown. He was three times sent to represent the town in the congress at
Cambridge, and served four years as town treasurer. He was a man of great moral
worth and superior intelligence. He died in 1794, leaving four sons—Elisha,
Samuel, William and Lot—and three daughters—Lydia, Abigail and Deborah. Two of
his sons, Elisha and Lot, removed to Ashfield about the close of the
revolutionary war. Samuel removed to Barnstable and William died in Dennis,
leaving one son, Francis, who graduated from Harvard College, studied law, and
was for many years clerk of the United States circuit and district courts. He
returned to Dennis in after life and built a house on the spot where his
grandfather had lived. The posterity of Elisha and Lot are principally in the
towns of Franklin county, where they live appreciating the blessings of its
rural life and the pleasures of intellectual enjoyment. Elisha Bassett, for
over fifty years a clerk in the district court at Boston, is a grandson of Lot,
who removed from Dennis. A fine, intelligent, clearheaded, right-minded race of
men are descended from Elisha Bassett of Sandwich.

The inventory of the estate of Josiah Snow of Marshfield,
carpenter, was presented by Rebecca Snow his widow 3 Jan 1692/3. the settlement
of the estate of Josiah Snow of Marshfield on 3 Nov 1693 mentions that there
are eight children, all daughters, and the widow (no names).

The estate of Rebecca Sawyer was administered on 22 June 1711 by
Nathaniel Winslow and Joseph Waterman; she was called their
"mother-in-law." On 20 June 1711 Gilbert Winslow, Samuel Baker and
John Sprague signed receipts to the administrator of their late mother Rebecca
Sawyer.
On 5 Feb 1711/2 Abia Snow dau. of Josiah Snow of Marshfield
chose William Carver of Marshfield as guardian.
On 10 May 1712 Nathaniel Winslow and Lydia his wife, Gilbert
Winslow and Mercy his wife, Samuel Baker and Sarah his wife, Joseph Waterman
and Luseanna his wife, John Sprague and Bethiah his wife and William Carver as
guardian of Abiah Snow divided land which formerly belonged to Anthony Snow.

Bethiah Snow, Wife of John Sprague: A New Mayflower Line, by
Claude W. Barlow, F.A.S.G., of Worcester, MA:
Josiah3 Snow, birthdate unknown, died Marshfield,
Mass., Aug. 1692, son of Anthony and Abigail2 (Warren) Snow and
grandson of Richard1 Warren of the Mayflower, married about 1669
Rebecca Barker, birthdate unknown, died Marshfield 28 April 1711, daughter of
Robert and Lucy (Williams) Barker of Duxbury. After the death of Josiah Snow
she married (2) in Duxbury 23 --- 1694 John Sawyer, whose first wife Mercy
Little was a granddaughter of Richard Warren.
Eight children of Josiah (or Josias) and Rebecca (Barker) Snow
may be found in Marshfield records, but two of them had died before their
father; yet the administration on Josiah Snow (Plymouth County Probate, 1:189)
says thate he left "eight children all daughters." Hence there must
be two more girls to be accounted for.
When Rebecca Sawyer died, her estate was administered (Plymouth
County Probate, 3:64) by Nathaniel Winslow and Joseph Waterman, and she was
called their "mother-in-law." There are receipts from Gilbert
Winslow, who married Mercy Snow, and Samuel Baker (not Barker), who married
Sarah Snow. There is also a reecipt from John Sprague of Duxbury, who had a

Marshfield dec. The inventory was dated 5 April 1736. The settlement of
personal estate between the widow and the children dated 28 March 1737 names
sons Snow and Oliver of Marshfield; dau Thankfull Keen, wife of Nathaniel of
Pembroke; dau. Ruth Winslow of marshfield; dau. Lydia, wife of Joseph Thomas of
Marshfield; dau. Abial Winslow of Marshfield; widow Deborah Winslow; sons Snow
and Nathaniel to get the real estate and pay the others their portion.

Job & Benjamin; daus. Mercy and Rebecca. On 14 Oct 1748 an account was
presented by Barnabas Winslow of North yarmouth, Co. of York. On 30 March 1751
Anthony Winslow gave a receipt to Barnasbas Winslow. A further account of
Barnasbas Winslow dated 27 Oct 1760 mentions "what the widow left of her
husband's estate." It mentions payments to sisters Mercy and Rebecca. On 6
Aug 1761 Anthony Winslow of Bridgewater, yeoman, was appointed administrator of
the estate of Mercy Winslow, widow of Marshfield, dec. On 22 march 1761 anthony
winslow of Marshfield, gentleman; William Howland and wife Mercy of Pembroke;
and Winslow Richardson, Rebekah Richardson and Stephen Richardson as heirs of
Rebekah Richardson quitclaimed to Job Winslow of Marshfield to replace a lost
deed dated 10 Oct 1760 covering 13 acres of land in Marshfield on which
"our honored Father dwelt."

Gilbert Winslow bought the John Mosier farm on Harrisickett
River, North Yarmouth, Me., in 1698, and sold it to Job Otis, 17 Feb 1702.
Gilbert Winslow (the father) of Marshfield was as early as 1698
owned land in Noth Yarmouth. Barnabas was the town's first clerk after its
organization, serving from 1733 to 1763 continuously with the exception of one
year. Doctor Gilbert Winslow was the second physician of the town.

John Sprague had been a constable in Marshfield in 1708, but a
deed shows that they were in Duxbury in 1710; hence it seems likely that their
first child was born in Marshfield, the rest in Duxbury. The order of the
children is reconstructed from the known age at death of some of them, and also
on the assumption that the sons and daaughters as listed in the will are each
in order of age.

born abt 1682 died 14 Dec 1739 in his 57th year married Bethiab........ He
removed to Duxbury with his brother Samuel, they had two farms comprising 320
acres and constituting what was called "Sprague's Neck." The two
farms were divided by a road, now Harrison St. John lived on the north side.

Sprague genealogies do not identify Bethiah Snow as wife of John
Sprague; George Bowman did not print any history of this family; their marriage
record is not preserved; and their children were not recorded in Marshfield,
Duxbury or the surrounding towns. It was the discovery of the will of John
Sprague, Senior, of Duxbury, which proved that he and Bethiah had had a family
(Plymouth County Probate #19058). This will was written 27 Nov 1739 and
witnessed by Moses Soul, John Samson, and John Wadsworth, and sworn to by the
witnesses 4 Jan 1739. In addition to the wife Bethiah it mentions the following
children: eldest son John Sprague to have wearing apparel; son Peleg Sprague a
red cow; son Abijah Sprague half of my farm; daughter Bethiah Curtis wife of
David Curtis one cow; daughter Rebeckah Arnold wife of Ezra Arnold £5; daughter
Joanna Arnold wife of James Arnold £5; daughter Susanna Sprague my bed;
daughter Aseneth Sprague a bed. the marriages of these children are all
confirmed in Duxbury records, and the eldest son John Sprague, Jr. had just two
children, who he named Bethiah and Snow.

The Descendants of Robert Barker of Duxbury, p. 13: "Robert Barker began his
career as a soldier, and was made a lieutenant under Maj. James Cudworth Oct.
4, 1675, but during King Philip's War abruptly terminated his connection with
the company, as Deane suggested, because he had become convinced of Quaker principles.
The record is that he was degraded and fined 15s. because he 'broke away from
the army, when they were on the march, in a mutinous way and by his example
allured others.' Several of his associates in this movement were Friends, and
the meetings of the society were regularly held in his house about the year
1700. He early utilized the water power of the brook, on which his father's
house stood, for in 1681 he owned a sawmill there, and in 1684 held land at
Pudding Brook, where he was given liberty to build a dam in 1693. Farming (and
blacksmithing?) also occupied his time in later years -- and he held the
offices of constable (1685) and surveyor (1687). His interests extended to
Rhode Island, for he deeded land in 1707 for 36 pounds to his Uncle Robert of
Jamestown."
