Samuel Eells, and his father John Eells, returned to England at the time of the Cromwell War. He return to America in 1661.

Major Samuel Eells as he was called, son of John Eells, was baptized at Dorchester, MA, 3 May 1640 about two days old by Rev. Richard Matthew and died in Hingham, MA 21 Apr 1709. He was an infant when his father returned to England and apparently did not return to America until he was at least 21 years old. Next we find him in Milford, CT where his marriage took place. In 1662 he settled at Milford, New Haven, CT where county records show that he served on juries at various dates from Nov 1666 to April 1671. On 15 May 1670 he was admitted to the church and his wife was also admitted 10 July of the same year. He served on committee chosen by the town in 1677 to transcribe from "Old books what is necessary to ye New books as grants of land, etc," at Milford CT. Samuel Eells was a clerk of the County court, deputy, commissioner, town clerk, settler at Hingham, MA in 1689, weaver, owner of a fulling mill, selectman, justice of the peace, deputy to the General Court and soldier in King Philip's War.
Great Migration Begins shows that Samuel was in MA when he married Anna Lenthal
Samuel Eells came to Milford with his bride in 1668. After his wife's death, Samuel settled at Hingham, of which he was representative in 1705. Purchased nine acres of land, meadow and orchard in Hingham in 1705. Upon his death, the Wharf Lane property was inherited by his son, Col. Samuel Eells.
The Eells-Stow House believed to be the oldest house in Milford, CT, takes part of its name from the Eells family, who arrived in Milford in the later 17th century from the Boston area. It was built by Samuel Eells about 1670. It was sold, in 1754, by his grandson, Nathaniel Eells to Captain Stephen Stowe.

The death of Harry L. Eells, who spent his boyhood in this vicinity, occurred Thursday at a sanitarium in Des Moines, where he had been receiving treatment for eight weeks for a nervous breakdown. He was born in Makee township February 5, 1878, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Lenthel Eells, the former being a well known educator of this county and also served as county superintendent. Harry was engaged in teaching near Waterville when the Spanish-American war broke out, and gave up his work to enlist in Co. I on April 26,1898. The company was first stationed at Camp McKinley, Des Moines, and mustered into U.S. service on June 2, 1898. The regiment was sent to Jacksonville, Florida, and while there Harry was transferred to U.S. hospital service and served in that capacity until the close of the war when he received his discharged on May 13, 1899. Deceased was widely known in educational circles throughout the state and for several years was at the head of the rural educational department of the Iowa State Teachers college. In 1929 he delivered the Memorial Day address at Waukon. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Pearl Gould, and two children, a son LeClair and a daughter Ruth, a sister Mrs. Alta Knipe, New Hartford, Iowa, and a brother Donald of Oskaloosa.A military funeral was held Sunday after noon at the Methodist church at Cedar Falls. Rev. W. G. Crowder, former Waukon pastor, assisted two other ministers in the services, and all spoke eloquently regarding the life of deceased.

Eells Family History
Rev. Nathaniel Eells graduated from Harvard, 1699, A.M. 1743, minister at Scituate, MA 1704-1750. His father moved to MA when he was 11 years old. His sermons were printed and are preserved in the library of the CT Historical Societies.
History of First Parish of Norwell, Mass. 1642-2000
NATHANIEL EELLS (1704-1750) Mr. Eells was native of Hingham, a graduate of Harvard, and served the parish for 46 years. He was much beloved by his parishioners who were always glad to have him ride his horse to their doors to inquire for their health and hand his pipe to be lighted with a coal from their open fireplace. He was a leader amongst the neighboring clergy and often traveled to distant parts of the state to attend ecclesiastical conferences. He prepared his sons and several other young men for Harvard, also for the ministry, one of them being Thomas Clap who in 1740 became president of Yale.
By this time the parish had grown considerably, so in 1707 soon after the coming of Mr. Eells, a larger meeting house was built on Herring Brook, the site being south of the old tomb yard opposite the present edifice. At the same time a highway was laid out "from the way of Job Randall's along over to the eastward of Benjamin Sylvester's home and the saw mill pond until it comes to the way near to Bryant's house".
ICH: Nathaniel Eells 1704-1750 was fourth Minister of the First Parish of Scituate Church, to understand where the town of Scituate was read the following: Originally Scituate included what are now the towns of Hanover, Norwell, and Scituate. Hanover became a separate town in 1727, our section became South Scituate in 1849 and the name was changed to Norwell in 1888. The First Parish of Scituate was established in 1634 and the meeting house was erected on Meeting House Lane just below the old cemetery as you go toward the ocean. The spot is not marked but there is a hollow place on the right hand side which is where most believe the meeting house stood; also a tablet in the graveyard refers to it.

Historical Sketch of the Town of Hanover, MA by John S. Barry 1853 page 20
In 1740 a company was enlisted in the county of Plymouth, by Capt. Winslow, to serve in the expedition against the Spanish West Indies, under Admiral Vernon, whose original muster-roll, on parchment, is still in existence, and in the possession of Revd. Benjamin Kent, of Roxbury. Of the 500 men sent in the expedition by MA not more than 50 returned, many having fallen victims to the prevailing tropical fevers. Samuel Eells enlisted in this company as an Ensign, and died, either on the passage from Carthagena to Jamaica or at Jamaica, May 9, 1741, in the 35th year of his age. His widow, Hannah, who survived him for many years, and occupied his homestead, obtained a pension from the British Government, throught the friendly aid of the Revd. Ebenezer Thompson, Rector of St. Andrew's Chuch, which, we understand, was punctually remitted to her to the close of her life.
