Early researchers were convinced John Randall was the son of the
mayor of Bath and that his wife was Elizabeth Morton. further investigation has
shown that he was not the son of the mayor, but leaves open other related
possibilities.
"The Missing Randalls: Descendants of John1
Randall of Westerly through his son Peter"
ICH: from my cousin Nancy Peterson on her research with permission:
John Randall born probably around 1640, married before 1666, Elizabeth,
whose surname remains undetermined. John Randall was, or became, a Baptist and
evidently settled in Newport, Rhode Island, prior to a move along with other
members of his church to Westerly abt 1665. This is evidenced only by a letter
found in the town records of Providence written in 1678 from Westerly to the
Newport (Baptist) church, signed by John and Elizabeth Randall, Robert Burdick,
Job and Jane Badcock (Job, son of James Badcock) and Mary Sanders (wife of
Tobias Sanders)
In 1670, John purchased from Thomas Bell, 300 acres of land in
Stonington along the Pawcatuck River. . This was land John believed to have belonged
to the town of Westerly. However, in 1663, the courts had declared the
Pawcatuck River to be the dividing line between the Colonies of Rhode Island
and Connecticut. Thus, John's land was located in territory now claimed by
Stonington, Connecticut. At a town meeting held August 9, 1670, the Stonington
authorities protested the sale, declaring their dissatisfaction with the fact
that the sale had been made privately between the two men, rather than at a
formal town meeting. In order for the sale to be considered valid, the town
leaders insisted that John come to Stonington and declare his loyalty to the
Connecticut Colony. On November 30, 1670, John attended a Stonington town
meeting, at which time he was admitted as an inhabitant of the town. He may never
have lived upon this land, or at least did not consider himself a resident of
Stonington, for his name continues to appear in Westerly records until his
death about 1684.

(FHL film #940222)
On 18 May 1669, John Randall was recorded in the "List of
the Free Inhabitants of the Town of Westerle." but without an assigned lot
number, although lots were assigned to Badcock, Burdick and Saunders.

William Randall was born in the year 1782. His brother, General
Roswell Randall, was born in 1786. Their father, Robert Randall was a native of
Stonington, CT. William was reared to farming pursuits. Roswell obtained a
superior education, and studied law with Stephen O. Ranegan, of Oxford. he was
admitted to the bar, but never practised. The brothers engaged in merchandise
together in Madison county, but removed to Cortland Village about the year
1812, where they continued the business. Their store was on the site now
occupied by that of James S. Squires. They were highly successful in trade,
which continued for a number of years. they at length dissolved their
partnership, and William erected a store, which is now the Randall Bank.
Roswell built the Eagle Store, now unoccupied. when they finally discontinued
the mercantile trade, the former engaged in banking and farming, and the latter
in cultivating his farm. William Randall was emphatically a man of mark iin his
day. He possessed a clear, strong, and vigorous intellect, a firm and resolute
mind, a warm and generous heart, and was in shot, a valued citizen. He died Dec
23, 1850. Roswell Randall was an early Post-master of Cortland village, and has
honorably filled various other positions. His military rank of
Brigadier-General was attained throught the several gradations, commencing with
fourt Corporal. He was much admired as a military officer. and now, at the age
of seventy-two, with his physical and mental constituation unimpaired, has but
partially retired from the active duties of life. William and Roswell Randall
were energetic business men. The monuments of their memory may be seen in the
elegant residences, erected at their expense, whichadorn and beautify the
village.

In the mean time the two brothers , William and Roswell Randall
, who established themselves here as early as 1813 , had extended their
business operations to a wonderful extent for so small a place and early a
period. They had two large stores , one operated by Roswell where the squires
block stands , and the other run by William in the Randall Bank building. They
owned distilleries and asheries , two of the former being located on South Main
street. They dealt in everything the farmers had to dispose of , from tow cloth
to live stock , and early laid the foundation of the wealth they subsequently
acquired.

March 1754. Greenfield served in the French & Indian War in Major Storr's

May 1756. It seems he was killed as a direct or indirect consequence of the
war, for he was recently deceased in Sept 1756, when Annah filed in Pomfred
District Probate Court to be reimbursed for a "morning suit", among
other expenses incurred in conjunction with the death of her "beloved

a few months old. Joshua may have married second 5 Mar 1846 Hannah Dingman at Superior, Washtenaw, MI. my ggg maternal grandparents
from the family record and the memory of Emily Crandell
Blake, dau of Eliza Crandell and granddaughter of Sarah Smith Randall Written about
1927
So far as I have been able to learn, the children of Joshua
Randall and Sarah Smith Randall were born in NY, the older ones in and near New
York City and the younger ones in and near the central part of NY. My mother,
Eliza Randall, was born in Pompey, NY. Mother learned thru her brother John
that their mother Sarah Smith Randall married for her first husband, when she
was very young, the first mate in Capt. Angle ship just before it sailed to
foreign lands never to return. There were no children by grandmother's first
marriage. Uncle John did not remember the name of grandmother's first husband.
Capt. Angle married grandmother's eldest sister, Abigal. Sarah Smith Randall
was of pure Holland Dutch blood; her ancestors were among the first settlers of
New Amsterdam. Sarah Smith Randall, great-grandmother of Loise Randall Hutchins
was an ancestress to be proud of in everyway. A woman of more tha ordinary
intelligence and refinement, well educated, a reader of the very best
literature, very patriotic. Grandmother was a small gray-eyed, fair
complexioned, beautiful woman.
As I remember her, she always wore dainty spotless white lace
caps; her hair was white. She always wore a white lace fichu or one made of the
same material of her own summer dress edged with lace, crossed at her belt,
always the fichu about her neck and shoulders. Every article of grandmother's
dress was spotless and neat. she was always knitting stockings, mittens, etc.,
for the numerous members of the family when I knew her. I was twelve years old
when she died.
When I think of grandmothers compared with the old women of her
time, I cannot but wonder at her clean dainty ways and dress. It certainly was
marvelous after her long hard worked life with small means and a large family, making
every garment they wore from the wool as it was cut from the sheep and the flax
grown in their own fields. Grandmother has told me of the process of cleaning
the wool, then carding by hand and spinning and weaving into cloth after
working for days to dye the various colors. The flax was cut and retted in the
fields, then broken and hetcheled to make it ready to spin and weave; then came
the coloring process again. She made cloth for dresses, men's and boys suits,
sheets, pillow slips and everything in the shap of cloth they had to wear,
besides knitting all the stockings. Some work. Most people find it hard now a
days to make their clothes with all the cloth furnished for them. Mother had
several pieces of linen that grandmother made. They were very fine and even.
My mother Eliza Crandell did not look at all like her mother,
being tall (5 ft. 7 1/2 in. dark brown eyes and hair, fair complexion, tho. she
was like her mother in dainty ways. I never saw granfather Randall. He died in
NY before I was born, long before grandmothers death. Grandfather Randall was
tall 6 ft in his stocking feet, grandmother used to say. Dark complexion and
eyes, black hair, very athletic. His father was English, sided with England
during the Revolution. Mother has told me that grandfather was quite a sporty
man, fond of good horses, etc., and would get quite "set up" at
General Trainings and other big events of the times. General Trainings was in
those days a big event where all kinds of sports and racing were indulged in as
well as strong drinks.
Grandmother Randall always said she was the first of her family
to marry out of the pure Holland Dutch blood. Grandmother was very patriotic,
always trying to teach her grandchildren to love their country and their
country's flag, say it was most beautiful flag that waved over any country and
the most wonderful government that ever existed. It was always one of her
regrets that grandfather Randa;;'s father had been a Tory. Grandmother
Randall's father (first name not remembered) Smith, died in the service of the
government of pneumonia during the spring of 1780 before grandmother's birth.
She was but four months old when her mother died. The four children went to
live with their grandmother Bogaardt, her mother's mother. Another family name
I used to hear her mention was Baugardus - I think it was spelled.
The names of the four orphaned Smith children ere Abigal,
Gabriel, Elizabeth and Sarah. Abigal married Capt. angle before mentioned.
Elizabeth married a man by the same name, but I do not remember if grandmother
ever said if the Angles were brothers. The grandmother with whom the children
lived on staten Island met with an accident which caused her death. She was
spinning in the attic, there was no railing about the attic stairs, so it was
suppoed she accidently stepped off as she was found dead at the foot of the
stairs. Grandmother was still quite a young girl and went to live with her
oldest sister who married Capt. Angle and lived in New York City. It was in New
York City that the family Bible and other family records were burned when the
Angle house was burned. That is the reason we have so little to trace our
branch of the Smith family. Grandmother said that the Angle home was filled
with treasures from every land that Capt. Angle had brought home from his many
long trips on the ocean, He finally sailed never to return.
I have forgotten so many of the names, especially the first
names, which grandmother told me "you must write down", but I did not
think much about it, and she had lived such a busy life that I do not wonder
that she did not do it herself. I have a whalebone box that Capt. Angle gave to
grandmother; he brought it from Russia. I was but twelve when grandmother died
and did not realize the importance of a family record. I would have a complete
record had I done so. Mother never took any interest in her ancestors, always
saying, "the less you know about them the better." I know both mother
and grandmother were very sensitive about great grandfahter Randall's haveing
been a Tory.
Grandmother Randall's grandmother Bogaardt that the children
went to live with lived on staten Island. I have not the dates of the deaths of
any of mother's brothers and sisters or her fther's.I have never been able to
find them among any of mothers papers. I knw she had them. My mother, Eliza,
died May 9, 1905 in Colorado Springs. Grandmother Randall died March 4, 1865 in
Laona, IL. My mother was a widow fifty years. Smith and Arminda both died in
Michigan, John in Green county WI, Mahala, William and ruama in Laona, IL,
Euphema in MN, Joshua in NE, Berthana lived for many years in Laona, moved
west, died at her daughter's Emma Phipps in MN.
I am very sorry that I did not record all that grandmother told
me. I remembeered everything until a few years ago after a severe illness that
lasted tow years, I found I had forgotten so much of importance. Also, I am not
as young as I used to be; will be 3/4 of a century on my next birthday. I do
not feel old, just have to look in the mirror to realize it. Life is worth
living with all its ups and downs. I think everyday of my many blessings and
thank God for all that HE has done for me and mine and for all that He has
given to the inhabitants of this wonderful world that He has given us for a
home. I cannot see why everyone does not try to do the very best they can
everyday and try to show thankfulness for all our blessings. Just think how on
every side are hidden things just waiting for us to work and discover them and
to use the things that lie waiting ready to use. i thank our Creator for it
all.

Thanks to cousin Nancy Peterson for information on the following
children of John Jacob Randall and Amy Shotwell. Census records added by me.
ICH
From cousin Nancy:
This family lived in Halfmoon before removing to Mentz. John and
Amy had thirteen recorded children and evidently two or three more. One of
these children, Ezra, recorded his parents' death dates in his family Bible,
which records began the search which eventually led back to Preston, CT.
Judging from the small amount of land which they owned, John was not a farmer;
most of his sons reported in later census enumerations that they were masons.
The family went west to Ohio in the mid-1830s, eventually settling in Clark
county, when John died in 1845 and where Amy may have died in 1851. By 1860
most of the family had relocated just south to Cedarville, Greene, OH.

Clara graduated from Port Byron High School 1884
Clara graduate of Boston University class of 1888
Clara is better known as the aid and biographer of naturalist John
Burroughs 3 April 1837-29 March 1921
There is a picture of Clara at the following url:
http://www.homeoint.org/photo/b2/barrusc.htm
which says: Clara was one of a small number of women who graduated
from medical school in the late 19th century. After graduation in 1888
from Boston University, she practiced in New York State (Middletown State
Hospital of Homeopathy) and was also a professor of psychiatry at Women's
College, N.Y.C. Dr. Barrus was close friends with John Burroughs, the
famous naturalist and nature writer.

Dr. Clara Barrus Physician, is Dead
Associate of John Burroughs for Twenty, Years and His Biographer

For Eighteen Years Was on Staff of Middletown Hospital for Insane –
Retired in 1914
Dr. Clara Barrus, literary executor and biographer of John Burroughs, died
yesterday evening at the home of her sister, Mrs. John P. Johnson, at 222
Boulevard, Scarsdale, after anillness of about three months.
Dr. Barrus was born on Aug. 8, 1864, at Port Byron, N.Y. She was
graduated in medicine from Boston University in 1888, and for four years
practiced at Utica. For eighteen years she served as assistant physician at the
Middletown Hospital for the Insane, being also professor of psychiatry at the
Women’s College of New York City. She operated a private sanitarium at Pelham
from 1912 to 1914, but since 1914 had not practiced.
In 1902, originally part time and finally for her full time, she
became associated with the naturalist, John Burroughs, and contined in this
association for nearly twenty years until his death in March, 1921. Under his will
she became his literary executor and official biographer, editing two
posthumous volumes of his essays, “Under the Maples” and “The Last Harvest.”
In 1925 Dr. Barrus published “The Life and Letteers of John
Burroughs” in two vlumes and in 1929 edited “The Heart of Burroughs Journals.”
These two works comprise the published official biography of Burroughs. In
addition to these Dr. Barrusis author of a brochure, “The Retreat of a Poet
Naturalist,” 1905; “Our Friend John Burroughs,” 1914; “John Burroughs, Boy and
Man,” 1920, and “My Dog Friends,” 1928. These all are biographical of
Burroughs.
She was also author of “Nursing for the Insane,” 1908, and “A Life
Unveiled,” 1924. During the week just ended Dr. Barrus completed the final prof
sheets and the preparation of the index for a volume which is to appear in May,
1931, from Houghton Mifflin Companuy, “Whitman and Burroughs, Comrades.”
Dr. Barrushas been a lecturer on many literary and outdoors themes,
particularly on John Muir and John Burroughs.
She was one of the organizers and a charter member of the John
Burroughs Memorial Association, of which she has been a director from the first.
Her interest in this association was unflagging and for several weeks she had
hoped to attend the tenth annual meeting and birthday celebration held Saturday
in New York. By coincidence almost unique her own death occurred within an hour
of the adjournment of that meeting.
Through her lectures and her many books she had probably done more
than all others to make known John Burroughs to the people and to widen the
circle of readers of the great American literary naturalist.
