When the harvests failed he turned to auto mechanics and attended schools at General Motors. He and his family moved between the states of ND, SD, Montana and Washington where he worked as a welder and mechanic. He worked as a welder on the construction of the Fort Peck dam in Montana, at the time it was the largest earthen dam in the world. During WWII he worked two jobs, one at the shipyard as a welder and the other at boeing Airplance Company as a flight engineer on B17 bombers. After the war he worked as an auto mechanic owning his own business and also working for the Ford, Chrysler and General Motor dealerships retiring in 1966.
