made by Col. Henry Willis, dec'd as by Deed of Gift to the said
John Willis. Wits. Anthony Strother, Roger Dixon, Kemp
Taliaferro, George Buckner, Thomas Slaughter.
Also dated 15 Aug 1749, recorded in Cuopeper Co., Deed Book A,
p69 to the same John Stevens by John Willis "the younger son
of that name, etc." and Nanie his wife of Culpeper Co.,
mentioning only 400 acres of land "on both sides of Mt.

to the said John Willis," for 107:10 current money of VA.

Spotsylvania Co., VA Will Book "A", p190, dated 5 May
1733, Robert Spotswood bequeaths all of his estate to John Willis

JOHN WILLIS***
Probably died before 16 Feb 1869, Robertson or Sumner
Co., TN as shown in the suit of Susan Maxey vs Sherod Willis,
John Andrews & wife Mahala, Rebecca Hightlet, Jane Willis,
M.A. Willis, Larken Willis, G.W. Willis, W.T. Gregory, P.A.
Wilkinson, William Nash, Nancy Nash, Milton Gregory, Jemima
Gregory, Sally Willis, Delpha Willis and John Willis. All of the
above named defendants were properly before the Court by process
and publication in the manner required by law and they all having
failed to appear. A report is to be taken whether the lands can
be partitioned among the heirs of John & Delphy Willis, or
whether it will be to the interest of the heirs to sell the land.
(Mac TN, Ch CT Min, 1/173) Another suit was entered that appears
to be the same family. W.C. Johnson vs. W.T. Gregory et al. All
the parties are before the Court. Martha A., Willis E., Tabitha
E. and Matilda Andrews are minors and W.J. Cleveland was
appointed guardian Adlitum. (In an additional entry that was
crossed out it stated the minors named were children of W.J.
Andrews, dec'd.) (Ibid 176) This suit was shown again as Susan
Maxey vs John Andrews et al. There are 11 of the original heirs
and various heirs of said defendants. Land is to be sold. (Ibid
202) The suit was shown again with the names the same except
Rebecca Hutilitt?, M.A. is Martha A. Willis, J.R. Grace was
added, W.T. Gregory was administrator of Delpha Willis, dec'd.
Nancy Nash was the wife of William Nash, Jemima was the wife of
Milton Gregory. It is probably Polly Willis instead of Sally.
Land was sold. (Ibid 229-32) A suit was shown 13 Feb 1872 by
Rebecca Hekelett (Hitelett) vs Martha A. Willis & et al.
Other parties were Gregory W. Willis as guardian of Huson Willis,
dec'd., husband of the complainant???, James R. Good and John
Willis. (Ibid 477)

RICHARD WILLIS
From A Place in Time, pages 208-209:
In his early years, Churchill's network of debtors within the
county was confined to the lower precinct between the
Rappahannock and the road. South of the road, Matthew Kemp held
sway, operating in both Middlesex and Gloucester from holdings on
the lower Piankatank, with Richard Stevens and Robert Dudley
having to him the same relationship as Mickleburrough had to
Churchill. Robert Beverley, Christopher Robinson, and Richard
Willis divided the rest of the county. (The Wormeleys of Rosegill
had little part in these intracounty credit relationships after
roughly 1680; with their own connections in England, they
exported and imported largely for themselves.) Notably, the
connections abroad and within the county that allowed these
hegemonies did not automatically pass from father to son as land
and personalty did, but shifted from one planter-merchant to
another. We will return to the point. Suffice it here to note
that Beverley had fallen heir to the connections of John Burnham,
a major planter-merchant of the 1670s who died in 1681. When
Beverley died in 1687, Robinson's area of influence grew. When
Robinson died in 1693, Churchill's influence spread from the
lower precinct into the middle, while Gawin Corgin--Henry
Corbin's son, now grown to manhood, with extensive relations both
in Middlesex and England--entered the scene to take Robinson's
place on the Rappahannock side of the county from the Essex
boundary to just below Sunderland Creek. And when Willis died in
1701, Corbin's and Churchill's influence swelled to fill the
vacuum. Willis was much married but childless; his lands went to
a nephew, John Alden, but Alden never assumed the merchant role
of his uncle.
