Wilkes-Barre Record, 14 May 1884, Page 1, Column 7A DRIVER BOSS KILLED - Joseph Knight, driver boss at the Nothingham, aged 29 years, was killed at the foot of the shaft on Monday. He was ringing the bell at foot of shaft, when a loaded car was pushed too _____ the carriage. In his effort to place the car in proper position before the engineer could hoist away the carriage was started up about twenty-five feet with him on it, and then fell back killing him instantly. He should have signaled the engineer to stop before attempting to put the car properly on the carriage.

This from the New Haven CT Evening Register, 14 MAY 1884, p. 3 - "A hoisting carriage in the Nottingham mine, at Plymouth Pa., fell back twenty feet. Joseph Knight, a driver who was on it, was thrown to the bottom of the shaft and was instantly killed."and from the Philadelphia Inquirer, same date, p. 1 - "Mining Accident. Wilkes-Barre, May 13. A hoisting carriage in the Nottingham mine, at Plymouth, fell back twenty feet. Upon it was a loaded car of coal and Joseph Knight, a driver boss. The latter was thrown to the bottom of the shaft and killed."A quick check of the 1870 Census find Joseph at age 11 living with his parents, Esau and Sarah, and siblings, in Plymouth.
