Shawano County Journal

16 Feb 1928

Last Wednesday Mitchell Shawanometta, the last full blooded Menominee warrior, died at his home near Keshena. He was well along in years. The biggest fights that he took part in during the Civil War were the battles of Manassas Junction or Bull Run, 1862, Gettysburg, Jul 1, 1863, 16 days of fighting in the wilderness in 1864, and Petersburg and Cold Harbor June 2, 1864. He was present at the memorable meeting of the two great generals, Grant and Lee, when Gen. Lee surrendered his whole army to Gen. Grant on Apr 9, 1865. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon at the Catholic church and a large crowd of Indians followed the body to the cemetery showing their last respects to this honorable man. May his soul rest in peace.
