Man Who Has Lived in Belle Plaine for Fifty Years is Dead

August Winkler died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Belle Plaine at the age of seventy-eight, of arterial sclerosis. He had been sick only two weeks.

Mr. Winkler was born in Landsberg -On-The-Water, in Germany, June 3rd, 1841. At his christening he was given three names August Wilhelm Ernest. When he was eighteen years old, he came to America and went to a town called Busslo, in New York State. From there he went to Milwaukee, then a mere village, and worked for a few years. Then he came to Belle Plaine and has lived there on the same farm for over fifty years.

In 1861 he enlisted in a Wisconsin company and served his country for over three years in the Union army. He made a splendid army record and was discharged with honor.

After the war was over, he came back to Belle Plaine and was married in 1866 to Miss Wilhelmine Grews of Winchester, a town north of Oshkosh in Winnebago county.

The children born to this union are Mrs. Anna Drews and Mrs. Carrie Zank of Augusta, Mrs. Hulda Montelius of California, August, Ernest and Louise at home. Miss Louise also has a home in this city. He leaves besides his immediate family, two sisters, Mrs. Morris Muciler of Madison and Mrs. Louise Neitzel of Shawano.

Mr. Winkler has been always recognized as one of the valued citizens of the county. He was honest and friendly, true to his friends and ready to serve. Twenty-five grandchildren live to bless his memory and to perpetuate his name.

The funeral is to be held tomorrow afternoon at the farm home in Belle Plaine at one o'clock. Rev. Muelley is to officiate and the pall bearers who will lay him away in his long home are W, Retzlaff, Chas. Retzlaff, Herman Stibbs, Mr. Trunkle, Mr. Manzer and Mr. Timke.
