Shawano Evening Leader

Bowler Man, 76, Found Dead Today

A 76 year old bachelor, in ill health for some time, shot and killed himself last night at his home. Undersheriff William Seering said today. The body of Ernest Bartelme was discovered by a neighbor about 8:00 this morning, shot thru the head with a .38 caliber revolver. Bartelme had been accustomed to eating breakfast with his neighbors, the James Kugel's and when he failed to appear at the customary time, Kugel went to the house to investigate. He notified the Shawano County Sheriff's office, who in turn contacted Coroner Harvey Stubenvoll. Stubenvoll reported that Bartelme had been despondent for about 2 weeks. There was no suicide note, but the Coroner said that all his personal belongings had been laid out neatly on the table, apparently so that they would be easily found. The coroner said the shooting took place between 9 & 10 o'clock. There are no known close relatives, Stubenvoll said. The body was taken to the Schmidt Funeral Home in Wittenberg, where funeral services had been tentatively set for Wednesday.
