Fred Steinberg Dies Thursday at the Age of 91

 

Fred Steinberg, pioneer Shawano resident, died Thursday afternoon at the age of 91. Born in Berlin, Germany on Jan 20 1875, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Steinberg. He came to the U.S. at the age of 6 and came to Shawano in 1882. Mr. Steinberg attended Lincoln school and was in the 1st confirmation class at St. James. He was a Spanish American War Veteran, a member of the National Guard, and a charter member of the VFW Post. He owned and operated the Steinberg Foundry in Shawano for many years and operated a farm in the town of Belle Plaine from 909 until 1927. Mr. Steinberg enjoyed fishing very much in his earlier days and also was highly interested in community affairs. On Oct. 10, 1899 he was united in marriage to Hulda Rasch. She died in 1907 and his marriage to Agatha Hildemann took place on Aug 21, 1909. She survives along with the following children; George and Louis of Shawano; Tabea, Mrs.. Thomas Dalgleish of Milwaukee; B. Franklin Steinberg of Royal Oak, Mich; Norma Steinberg of Greeley, Colo; Carl of Lime Post, Pa; Arthur of New Springfield, Ill; Martha, Mrs. Martin Kowalske of Shawano; Martin of Dayton, Ohio; and Raymond of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Two children preceded him in death, Elenora in infancy and Reinhold in Nov of 1949 while serving in the U. S. Air Force.

 

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Henry of Campbellsport and 2 sisters, Gertrude Schilke of Lake Drive, Shawano and Helen Steinberg of Lake Drive, Shawano. Three brothers and 2 sisters also preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Steinberg was a member of St. Jaems Luth. Church of Shawano and the St. James Men's Club. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James Luth. Church. Military rites will be conducted at graveside at Woodlawn Cemetery by the VFW.
