Three have taken up
Special Service Work and Have Gone to Madison
There will be two quotas of selectmen leave Shawano this month to go away
to Camps. The Local Board is already appraised of the date and the time
of departure, but it is their policy, in fact their instructions, not to
give out the exact information regarding the schedule of trains. The
first quota will leave within 2 days.
The men who will go are Herman Bocher, Cecil; Joseph Staidl, Shawano; A
Mielke, Wittenberg; Valentine Matuscwski, Pulaski; Peter Peterson,
Pulaski. The alternates are Adam Grosskopf, Pella; Edward Krueger,
Bonduel; Emil Otto, Shawano. Three men who were to have gone in this
contingency have enlisted in the service and will take three months
training in Madison in preparation for their work. These three are Ralph
Gorman, Shawano; Claude Feltz, Tilleda; and Adolph Martins, Angelica.
The quota that will go the last of the month will leave for a camp rather
unusual to Shawano County men. The list for this quota is as follows.
Ernest Bernitt, Eland.
Paul Stuab, Shawano.
Robert Klabunde, Wittenberg.
Alvin Schmidt, Gresham.
Fred Lempke, Gresham.
Richard Kroening, Tigerton.

Bernard Brummel, Cecil.
Max Martens, Shawano, R.2.
Perry Owen, Birnamwood.
Henry Konkle, Pella.
Arthur Madson, Tigerton, now in Minn.

Our Boys in Germany
Iron Jaw Division is First
to Enter Kaiser’s Domain – Are near the Border
The Shawano boys who left here last summer as the National Guards Company
are now in Germany, fighting on German soil, near the Alsace border. They
are in the 32nd division, and the official statements came out
telling of where they are and was published in the Chicago papers,
Monday. The 127th infantry, and the 107th Supply
Train were included in the published list. Thus the Shawano boys will
have the honor when the war is over of being in the first group to go over
into German soil.

Paul J Winter, Government Appeal Agent, A M Andrews, member of the Legal
Advisory Board, and M J Wallrich of the Local Board are examining 50 men a
day now with their dependents, who are classified in Class Four, to
ascertain whether such persons have been properly classified, and if not
to make their recommendations to the Board of re-classification.
We
are satisfied that the committee is making an honest effort to get at the
truth of classification of different registrants, and if anybody knows of
persons whom they think are not properly classified they should make a
written statement and sign the same, and send it to the committee showing
wherein the parties have not been properly classified.

Many Leave This Week
Forty Young Men to Leave
for Different School’s to Learn
Another call has been issued for about 40 young men, most of whom are to
report this afternoon at 3 o’clock and the rest of them will report
tomorrow at 4 o’clock. They will all learn some mechanical trade which
will be useful to the government, which will be an excellent chance for
the young men, giving every one of them a splendid trade, and even if they
do not follow it after the war is over, it will be useful to them. While
all hope that the wear will be over soon, and it now looks as though the
Germans were going to be defeated in a short time, the war is going to be
a blessing to thousands of young men throughout the nation, for the simple
reason that it will give them an education and every one of them will
return home better and broader men in every sense of the word than when
they left home. Those who go this week are as follows:

Draft Calls Cancelled
Temporarily
Three hundred and sixty-two men were ready to entrain at Wausau early this
week to go to camps, when the order came to send the men home. According
to advices to the press, this does not mean for the men thus discharged a
complete release from being subject to military call, but simply a stay in
the working of the draft machinery on account of the armistice. Those
from here and neighborhood who were among the 362 thus affected were
Clarence Ed. Morton and Guyle Warner, of Eldron, Sammie Severson, of
Galloway, Ole Larson, of Norrie, Paul Frank, of Eland, and Raymond Schultz
and Frank Malzahn.

The draft boards throughout the state have been informed to clean up their
work by Dec 10, when all records must be completed. No more physical
examinations will take place and what was a few months ago the busiest
place in Shawano, will be closed for some time. No papers shall be
withdrawn from the files; no access to the files shall be permitted except
to members of the board or to the clerks. Dr. Cantwell has put in a great
deal of time on the Shawano county local board and given much valuable
services to the board. The other members now are P F Dolan and A S Larson
of this city, Guy VanDoren of Birnamwood, and Paul Furhman of Bowler.
Miss Beulah Whitehouse, the chief clerk, has been a very faithful
assistant and has rendered valuable help to the board since it has been
established.
