Frederick Ernest Becker
Oldham, SD - Frederick Ernest Becker was born in Mickelenburg,
Swerigen, Germany, July 4, 1852, being son of Fred and Sophia Becker.
As an infant he was baptised in the Lutheran church of Germany and upon
reaching the age of discretion he was confirned in this his baptismal covenant.
In the year 1869, at the age of 17, he came to the United States, accompanied
by his parents, the family locating at Elkader, Iowa. Here he resided
for ten years, until in 1879 he moved westward to Luverne, MN. In
the year 1881 the Becker family came to South Dakota where the deceased
filed a claim and homesteaded northeast of Oldham, which place continued
to be his home until 1913 when he moved to Oldham, where he lived until
the time of his death. Five years after his arrival in South Dakota,
in 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Kuehn, who after 9 years
of wedded life died January 1895, leaving her husband and four children,
two little girls Amelia and Emma, having died as children, but two still
living, Mrs. Fred Bernstein and Mrs. Joe Longville both of Oldham, SD.
In 1896 he was married to Mrs. Minnie Thompson, who died the following
year after 11 months of wedded life with the deceased. In the year
1898 he was married to Mrs. Pauline Hirchert Wesenberg, which widow survives
her husband. To this union were born four children, all living: Frd
and Rudoph both of Oldham, Mrs. John Mulvihill and Mrs. Roy Harder, both
of Sioux Falls, Mr. Albert Becker of Sioux Falls, a stepson. About
4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, February 1, Mr. Becker died very suddenly
while at his farm where the men were shelling corn. He leaves to
mourn his loss, his widow, seven children, 16 grandchildren, besides a
large number of relatives and friends. He was buried in St. Andrews
cemetery, northeast of Oldham. Mr. Beckers passing at the age of
74 marks the departure of another of the pioneers of Kingsbury county.
Coming to this country as a young man, he wresteled with poverty and the
many hardships of pioneer life, making for himself and family a home, and
in his way as a farmer contributing to the upbuilding of this virgin country
in the west. He early became a member of the German Lutheran church
to the south of Oldham and in January 1922, he was transferred to the Oldham
Lutheran congregation. Mr. Becker's last years have been marked by
a gradual decline in his health. Two or three strokes of paralysis
were but distant warnings that his end was not far distant. The angel
of death cut short his earthly career thus warning us all that our days
are faster than the weaver's shuttle. He has gone to the land from
which no wanderer returns until the trumpet of the arch angel Gabriel shall
call everyone back to life again. Peace be with his remains.
Out of town relatives who were in attendance are Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Becker
and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Mulvihill and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Harder
all of Sioux Falls, Mrs. Minnie Linde of Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wesenberg
of Canova, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sorenson of Mobridge.
