DNB states, about Nathaniel Bacon (-1676), politician in Virginia, that "... [he] was born on 2 Jan 1647, the son of Thomas Bacon and his wife, Elizabeth Brooke, of Friston Hall, Suffolk."

Although his father, in a contemporary document, is named as "Thomas Bacon", there is no evidence that his mother's name was Brooke, although this is widely reported in secondary sources, all of which are several hundred years after-the-fact.

There is a marriage of a Nathaniel Bacon to an Elizabeth Brooke, daughter of Robert Brooke about 1641, and in 1670 a Nathaniel Bacon is a co-heir to the estate of Robert Brooke.

Thus it appears that someone has merged Thomas Bacon, the father of Nathaniel Bacon; with this Nathaniel Bacon who married Elizabeth Brooke, trying to make them one couple, which they are not. Other authors have continued to pick this up uncritically.
