Corrections for article on William Barlow (d. 1568)

Several corrections need to be made to the above article:

(1) On his suggested parentage - whoever Christian, wife of John Barlow, was, she wasn't the _heir_ of Henry Barley of Albury, as his line continued through his son (see VCH Hertfordshire). The Visitation evidence cited by Sir Montague Barlow, in "Barlow Family Records" identifies her only as a Barley of the Essex-Hertfordshire family. Barlow presumably identifies her as a daughter of Henry Barley because of an 18th-century passage in the Wotton MSS describing John Barlow as a brother [in law] of William Barley, but the accuracy of this passage is open to question (see below).

(2) Barlow suggests that John Barlow was a descendant of the Essex-Hertfordshire branch of the landed _Barley_ family. There seems to have been no significant landed family in Essex or Hertfordshire known as _Barlow_ - at least none appears in the indexes of the Hertfordshire VCH or Morant's History of Essex.

(3) I am suspicious of the claim in the Wotton MSS that John Barlow's estates were confiscated along with William Barley's in 1497. The entry in Rot. Parl. (vi 503-506) relating to William Barley's attainder and other supporters of Warbeck doesn't mention a John Barlow, as far as I can see.

(4) William Barlow's brother Roger Barlow of Slebech could not have died in 1558. His will, dated 6 May 7 Edward VI [1553] was proved in the PCC 26 June 1554 and again 20 May 1558.
