NOTES: Courts of General Quarter Sessions of the
Peace were established in each District in
Upper Canada after 1788 to hear minor
criminal cases and to provide for the
administration of local government. The
Minutes of the Court of General Quarter
Sessions of the Peace contain information on
a wide variety of administrative and judicial
matters. Of particular interest to
genealogists are numerous lists of minor
officials, government contractors, petty
offenders, and taxpayers found in the
records.
