3.  SARAH2 CRUMPTON (LUKE1) was born April 04, 1787 in ,Greenville, SC, and died in AL.  She married DAVID LOWRY Abt. 1802 in SC.  He was born Abt. 1780 in ,SC.

Notes for SARAH CRUMPTON:
Sarah and her husband David Lowry are identified as being born in South Carolina in the 1850 Shelby County AL census.  It appears that David died between 1850 and 1860.  Sarah is identified with what appears to be the oldest son of Thomas (David) in the 1860 Jefferson county AL census.  (David could also be a younger son of David and Sarah??)  In the 1860 census she indicates that she was born in Ohio ?  Minnie Lowry, one of their older children, indicates she was born in S C. (There may not be a Minnie Lowry, see notes on Minnie)
Sarah's five (5) brothers, James, John, Luke Jr., William and David and their sister Miriam (wife of Jesse Avary) all moved to Bibb or Shelby County Alabama in the early 1800's.
U.V.Waldrop found the valuable "Book of Ages" in a trunk in Alabama , with the names and birth dates of the Crumptons.
The Crumpton data was provided by Dan Crumpton, P.O. Box 47, Warrenton, GA 30828.  He is a member of the "Crompton List" on Roots.

Notes for DAVID LOWRY:
David and Sarah Lowry were in Shelby County AL prior to the 1820 cens us report. In the 1830 census report, Thomas and George were marrie d and were living near David and Sarah.  George and Thomas moved to C oosa County AL in the very early 1830's.. Living with George's famil y were two older people who appear to have been David and Sarah.  I n the 1850 and 1860 census report George and his family had moved t o Jefferson county AL.  Thomas and his family and David and Sarah wer e back in Shelby County AL in the 1850 census report.  Thomas dissapp eared after the 1850 census report and was assumed to have died.  Dav id's wife, Sarah, was with David (son of Thomas) in Jefferson count y in the 1860 census report, living near George.  Also living near Ge orge in the 1860 census report was William Lowery (son of George) an d his family, and David Lowery (son of George) and his family. Davi d was not seen after the 1850 census.  David and Sarah were living ne xt to their son (Thomas) in Shelby county in the 1850 census report . All of the children of David have not been located at this time.  T he 1820 Shelby County AL Census report indicated that David and Sara h had three boys and three girls (under the age of 21). Thomas and Ge orge married prior to the 1830 census report.
The movement of these families must be view with caution, the Count y lines varied in the early years.
It appears that Sarah (d:1821), Nancy and Lousia are daughters of Dav id and Sarah.

Children of SARAH CRUMPTON and DAVID LOWRY are:
 i. LOUISA3 LOWERY.

Notes for LOUISA LOWERY:
Aunt Louisa Langston is believed to be a daughter of David Lowry.

ii. NANCY LOWERY, m. JOHN BEDFORD, September 12, 1825, Shelby Co. AL.

Notes for NANCY LOWERY:
Nancy Lowery is believed to be a daughter of David Lowry.

iii. MINERVIA LOWERY, b. Abt. 1802, SC.

Notes for MINERVIA LOWERY:
Minervia "Minnie" Lowery was shown in Census reports as being born i n SC. Historical publications indicate that she married Jessie Avary in Alabama.  Jessie Avary was married to Mariam Crumpton, a younger sister of Minnie's mother, Sarah. Jessie and his family migrated to GA, and then to Alabama.  Jessie and his family lived next to other Crumptons and David Lowry in Alabama. IF this is the case, it woul  indicate that Jessie's wife, Mariam, must have died.  Additional research is necessary to establish this possibility.  Cemeteries must be searched to determine if Mariam is buried in Alabama.  Marriage certificates must be examined to see if Minnie married Jessie. (Unfortunately the 1830 records have been lose. This affects the records of 18 20,1830 and 1840 marriages in Shelby county).  Miriam appeared as "Myron" in some records.  Minervia appeared as "Minnie" in some records.
The Following appeared in the Book "Pioneers and Residents of West Central Alabama prior to the Civil War" by Madge Pettit :
Jesse Avery was born in 1803 in South Carolina and was married to Minnie (Lowery ?) who was born in 1902 in South Carolina. Her father is thought to be David Lowery, born 1780 in South Carolina and her mot her thought to have been Susan, born 1785 in South Carolina. The 185 0 census for Shelby County, Alabama, indicates Jesse and Minnie were living at house #231 with following children : Robert L.,Luke, Lydia, Esley D., Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, James, and Frances.  Next door at #230 were David and Susan Lowery, and at #239 was Thomas Lowery.

AFTER entensive data exchange with the Avary descendants, it was determined that the report by Madge Pettit was based entirely on the 1850 census, and she made incorrect assumptions.  Jesse Avary was married to Mariam Crumpton (Myron, Minnie) and they remained married until death.  This wouild also indicate that THERE NEVER was a Minnie Lowery.. So quite likely, there is another daughter who was the first daughter of David Lowery.

9. v. GEORGE LOWERY, b. Abt. 1805, ,TN; d. 1880.

7.  MIRIAM2 CRUMPTON (LUKE1) was born Abt. 1802 in ,Greenville, SC, and died November 29, 1881 in ,Winston, AL.  She married JESSIE THOMAS AVARY 1817 in ,Greenville, SC.  He was born October 29, 1803 in ,Greenville, SC, and died June 11, 1885 in ,Winston, AL.

Notes for MIRIAM CRUMPTON:
There is an investigation going on concerning Mariam Crumpton, wife of Jessie Avary.  They were married in SC.. migrated to GA and then AL .  There are historical reports in Shelby County AL indicating that Minervia "Minnie" Lowery was also married to Jesse.  This would indicate that Mariam had died or something of that nature, in Alabama.  Myron was not listed in the bible as one of the children of Luke in th e U.V. Waltrops data. The 1850 Shelby County census shows 2nd son of Jessie and Myron to be "Luke". Miriam's name was also spelled as "Myriam".
Luke Crumpton Sr. married Polly Duke, daughter of William A. Duke, and claim that said William A. Duke was part Eastern Cherokee Indian .  The claim was rejected in part because their residence was far removed from the Cherokee Tribe and "never enrolled with or shared in payments of the Cherokees".

After considerable data exchange between Avary descendants, it was determined that Minnie Lowry was not married to Jesse Avary.  These assumptions were based on the 1850 Census.  Miriam Crumpton Avary was also called "Minnie" and remained married to Jesse until their death.  It is quite likely that there is NO Minnie Lowry.

Notes for JESSIE THOMAS AVARY:
Jessie Avary was the only son of Robert and Lydia Avary. He was born in the Greenville District, South Carolina.  Some of the grandchildren of Jessie believed he was hanged by carpetbaggers in his own back yard.. Jessie and his wife migrated to Alabama about 1830 and settled near the Crumptons and David Lowry. His wife, Miriam Crumpton was a younger sister of David Lowry's wife, Sarah Crumpton.

Generation No. 3

8.  THOMAS3 LOWERY (SARAH2 CRUMPTON, LUKE1) was born Abt. 1804 in ,KY.  He married MARTHA CAMERON September 22, 1825 in ,Shelby, Al.  She was born Abt. 1807 in ,TN.

Notes for THOMAS LOWERY:
Thomas Lowery was married in Shelby County AL in 1825.  He was last seen in the 1850 Shelby Co. AL census report with his wife and family. The 1840 census report appears to indicate that Thomas had two older sons.  He appears to have died after 1850. We do not know if he took his family to Macon County AL in 1850, or that his three older sons Calvin, Andrew and Richard, went there on their own.. The three boys were all married in Macon County AL.  In the 1860 Covington County AL census report Kesiah Jane (Mathis) Lowery and her family were located near the Wesley Mathis family and the Jesse Beck family. Andrew Madison Lowery did not clearly appear in the census report.. There was a Madison Lowery listed in the place of Martin Lowery (age 4).  Also in the household was an Elizabeth Lowery.. Elizabeth appears to be the youngest daughter of Thomas Lowery of Shelby County AL. All of this points to the death of Thomas. We now have to locate Thomas's wife, Martha. Thomas's Father,   David was located in the Shelby County AL census 1820 census report.
David and his wife appeared to be living with their Son, George, in Coosa County AL 1840 census report; and with their son, Thomas, in the Shelby County 1850 census report. David was born in 1780 in SC and was one of the early settlers of Shelby County AL.  Living next to David in Shelby county is Jesse Avery who was married to Minnie (Lowry?) who was born in 1802 in SC and is believed to be a daughter of David. Also living next to David and Jesse Avery was Thomas Lowery.
Thomas Lowery was elected a county commissioner in Coosa County AL in 1833. There is a record of the commissioners meeding in May 1834 at Lexington.  The records indicate Thomas Lowery attending.  The next term a public road was ordered to be opened from Bait's Ferry on the Coosa River, and the nearest and best route to the county line of Coosa and Talladega to Talledega Town.  John Cameron was one of the appointed reviewers to mark out the road. They also ordered the opening of a public road beginning at the county line in the town of Wetumpka and run then in a straight direction to the county line of Talladega county, at or near Thompsons Coker's.  George Lowery was one of the reviewers  on this road that was known as the Jackson Trace.

Notes for MARTHA CAMERON:
Martha Cameron appears to be the daughter of William Cameron.  William (and David Lowry) appeared in the 1820 census report of Shelby County Alabama. In 1820 he had 4 sons and 1 daughter under the age of 21. He had 1 son and 1 daughter over the age of 21.  He also had 8 slaves.

Children of THOMAS LOWERY and MARTHA CAMERON are:
 i. DAVID4 LOWERY, b. Abt. 1826, ,Shelby, Al.

Notes for DAVID LOWERY:
David Lowery is assumed to be the oldest son of Thomas Lowery.  David was located in the 1860 census report of Jefferson country AL, living next to George Lowery, brother of Thomas.  Living with David Lowery was Sarah , the mother of Thomas and George.  Thomas is assumed to have died after the 1850 census report of Shelby County AL.

14.  ANDREW MADISON4 LOWERY (THOMAS3, SARAH2 CRUMPTON, LUKE1) was born 1833 in ,Coosa, Al, and died 1871 in Evansville, Escambia, Al.  He married KESIAH JANE MATHIS August 31, 1851 in Tuskegee, Macon, Al.  She was born October 14, 1835 in ,FL, and died April 10, 1920 in Canoe, Escambia, Al.

Notes for ANDREW MADISON LOWERY:
The following is a quote from the "History of Escambia County Alabama ".
"Andrew Madison Lowery was born of Scottish Immigrant parents in 1833, probably in Laurens County, Georgia. He served in Finnegan's Florida Regiment in the Civil War.  He was living in Georgia when the war ended and migrated by oxcart to Evansville, Alabama.  A man named Franklin shot
and killed Andrew, alleging that Andrew's dog was killing his sheep."
Evansville was a booming town which sprung up around a saw mill. The sawmill burned down in 1871 and the town vanished, as fast as it had sprung up. Evansville (1838-1871) was in Escambia County Alabama; near the old Miles Crossing, very near to the Sardis Church. Evansville was 2 miles east of
Wawbeek (Miles crossing). Wawbeek is between Canoe and Flomaton. Andrew and Kesiah are buried in the Bowman Cemetery at Wawbeek. Andrew died at age of 38, Kesiah died at age of 84. A major effort was mounted in early 1994 to locate Andrew's parents, brothers and sisters.  It appeared that Andrew missed the Georgia and Alabama Federal census (possibly because of the War between the States and his migration). The search has identified many Lowery's in Georgia as possible relations but no connection was accomplished. The 1880 Escambia County Alabama Federal census presented some conflicting data that redirect the search ef forts.  The census indicated that Andrew was born in Alabama, and his children (except one) were born in Alabama. Kesiah was located in Macon County Alabama in the 1850 census (with her family).  Kesiah was again located in the 1860 in Covington County living with or near her family.  She had five children at this time.  Andrew was missing and is assumed to be with the Confederate Army at this time? The 1880 census indicated that Andrew and his children were born in Alabama? 1900 census data indicates that their daughter Victoria was born in Georgia, so the data that
the family was in Georgia during the Civil War appears to be true. Research indicates that Andrew and Kesiah met and married in Macon county Alabama. The Wesley Mathis family was located in Macon County in 1850, and in Covington County in 1860.  Living close to them in Covington County was the Beck Family. Madison and Kesiah received a land grant in Covington County Alabama on 1 January 1855. The land grant was for 320.4 acres.  Also receiving land grants were Lunich Lowery (321 acres, 1855), Robert M. Lowery (78.8 acres, 1856) and William G. Lowery (160 acres, 1895).  A John Mathis received a land grant of 34.94 acres in 1886. Were these Lowery's related or is the connection to be made in Macon County Alabama? Andrew gave his name as Madison Lowery in the marriage license at Tuskegee, Macon County, A labama (31 August 1851) and for the Covington County land grant. Searches were retraced and a check for a "Madison" Lowery were included.
Other Lowerys that were married in Macon county and could be related are: S.R. Lowery, Elizabeth Lowry, S.R. Lowery and Elizabeth Hanley (27 Dec. 1851), Thee Lowery and Catherine Daniel (1 July 1853), Richard Lowery and Willis A. Williams (23 Dec 1855), Calvin Lowery and Eliza Hudson (6 April 1856), and Theodore Lowery and Richard P. Calvin .  The first location of Madison Lowery was his marriage to Kesiah Ja ne  Mathis in Tuskagee, Macon county on 31 Aug. 1881.  The second location is for land (320 acres) in Covington County Alabama in Jan. 1855.  In both cases he was identified as "Madison" Lowery.
The 1860 Covington County AL census report appears to suffer from many errors. Andrew Madison Lowery is not identified.. A Madison Lowery is identified instead of his child Martin Lowery..There is an Elizabeth Lowery in the household.  This is most likely Andrew Madison's youngest sister. The marriage licenses in Tuskegee, Macon co. AL identify Andrew Madison and two of his brothers, Calvin and Richard.

Notes for KESIAH JANE MATHIS:
Kisiah Jane Mathis survived her husband by 49 years but her pioneer spirit enabled her to rear her children by hard work.  She contracted work with the railroad, hauled cross ties, and she and the two oldest sons, chopped and delivered wood to the railroad to be used for fuel in the steam engines. She
would "dead-head" on the train to Montgomery from Canoe and bring back the payroll for the railroad workers.  She moved to Canoe in 1871 and lived to 1920. Most of Andrew and Kesiah's children are buried in Bowman Cemetery.
Three of her children homesteaded in Canoe;  Andrew Martin Lowery, Mattie Jane Dunaway, and Mary Dawson.  The 1860 Census (Covington) and 1880 Census (Escambia) indicate children born in Ala. Kesiah's parents came from South Carolina.  They moved to Florida, Georgia, and then to southern Alabama. Kesiah's brother and sister's, along with her son William Lowery and his wife, were the founder's of Enon, Florida. William Walter Lowery later moved to Williams Station (Atmore) and became a major influence in the development of Atmore and Escambia County. Kesiah died at age of 84.

Data for future use from Enon Cemetery:

We are in touch with John Uhel Grimsley (Bainbridge GA) and Arron Grimsley (Pensacola FL) and have established our relationship with the Grimsley tree by way of the Mathis and Beck trees.

Kesiah Jane Mathis name appears as "Kisiah" in the 1850, 1880 census reports.
It appears as Kesiah in other reports and Keziah in one report.

A six month search has not revealed a single census report that identifies Andrew Madison Lowery. After an intensive search of Georgia and location of the most likely family trees in Laurens Georgia, the search has now moved to Alabama (1880 and 1900 census reports indicate Andrew was born in Alabama).
Andrew met and married Kesiah in Tuskegee, Macon County on 31 August 1851. The by M.S. Kelton (JP). Search of the two Lowery families that lived close to the Mathis had not revealed Andrew.  The search has continued to other families as older children often worked as Laborers.. Kisiah and her son Andrew Martin acquired considerable land in the Canoe area. Her son Andrew Martin had a saw mill for many years.  It is assumed that the land was acquired to provide wood for the trains and for Andrew Martin's saw mill.

A false track was established when "Madison" was located with his family in the 1850 census of Campbell County Georgia. Contact with members of this tree identified our error (wrong spelling) and
the search continued on until we identified "Madison" where he married Kesiah in Macon county AL, and finally when when he was identified in the household of Thomas Lowery in Shelby County Alabama in the 1850 census report.

Notes for WILLIAM WALTER LOWERY:
William Walter Lowery was born in Tuskagee, Macon County Alabama. The family then  migrated to Covington County. During the Civil War, the family migrated to Georgia.  After the war, they migrated to Escambia County Alabama.
William Lowery was approximately 18 years old when his father died and his mother migrated to Canoe, AL. He was 21 years old when he married Mary Beck. They were married in the "Perdido" area in Escambia county Florida. ( This is the area where the Beck's and Mathis migrated to from Covington Count y AL.)
They moved to the area of the town of Center in Shelby County Texas and began their family. Jesse Beck, brother of Kesiah, also settled near Cente Texas. William and Mary later returned to Alabama where they were involved in the founding of Enon , Florida. William started homestead on 160 acres (Southwest quarter of Section ten, in Township three North of Range thirty three west of Tallahassee Merridian in Florida) in December 1880. He built a log dwelling with kitchen, outhouse smoke house, crib, stables and fen cing. He cultivated 10 to 12 acres each year for food for his family and farm animals. He received ownership of the land in June 1886. His homestead document was witnessed by A.D. Beck, Wesley Mathis, P.H . Williams, and J.L. Mathis. His land was located near the Perdido river and near the area where Enon was founded in about 1885. He was involved in the timber business (logging). He would cut down the origin al growth yellow leaf pine trees, haul them to the Perdido river, and float them down to the sawmill at Muscogee. Rumors are that he developed the method of tieing logs together and floating them down to the sawmill (Perdido river) with the crew living on the make-shift raft (This is doughtful, as this became common practice in the timber industry). Documents indicate that William, members of the Mathis family, members of the Beck family, and other closely associated people founded the town of Enon, Florida in 1885. These document are off by about 5 years. They started their homestead requirements in 1880 and completed the requirements about 1886.  It is assumed that their primary industry was timber and farming. The area was quite remote, with no railroad or postoffice. They would often have to use the postoffice in Ray, Alabama (across the Perdido river). He sold his land to James L. Mathis ($200) in August 1891 after he moved to what was then named Williams Station, Alabama.
Williams Station was renamed Atmore in 1895. William had one of the first stores in Williams Station, and there is some speculation that the "Williams" in "Williams Station" is William Lowery. The most accepted version of how Williams Station got its name is attributed to Bud Pleasant Williams .  Mr. Williams was a neighbor and friend of William Lowery in Florida.  The people in that area would travel up to the railroad stop in Alabama for supplies and the story goes that Williams Station was named after Pleasant Williams. William Lowery became a major contributor to the development of Atmore and
Escambia County.  He was affectionly known as "Uncle Bill" to the people in the area.  He was one of the founders of first bank (Bank of Atmore) which is still in existance. He opened the first ice house, and many other enterprises. He was the Vice President of the Atmore Hardware when it was incorporated. The Atmore Hardware was the first hardware store, first undertaking establishment, first Ford agency (Model T), and first furniture store in town. He was the Escambia County Commissioner from 1900 thru 1904. He was deeply involved with the design and construction of the County Courthouse built in 1902, The corner stone of the County Court house bore the inscription "W. W. Lowery".
He held considerable land; not just in the center of Atmore, but in surrounding areas. He was one of the real pioneers in the development of Atmore and the surrounding area.  He built houses for his children in the city block that he owned.  He developed and installed running water to the adjorning houses long
before Atmore provided running water for the residents. He and his children made major impacts on the local area. He is typical of the men that made America so great. He was a man of high moral standards and integrity , and was not afraid of work. If something needed fixing, he fixed it. William died at
the age of 81 of Cancer. Present research indicates that William met Mary Florence Beck in Covington County Alabama where she was living with her family. The Beck's, Lowery's and Mathis were close neighbors and friends. When William died, he left his house and its belongings to his daughters. The house became known as the "Lowery House". He left his bank stocks and other assets to his sons. Unfortunately, the "Lowery House" and the house behind it (Winton Walter Lowery Jr. house) was bought and replaced by the Atmore Advance Newspaper.  Very recently, it was discovered that the houses in the Lowery block are being restored.  What a shame that the grandest one of all is not there.

Notes for MARY FLORENCE BECK:
Mary F. Beck and William Walter Lowery were married in Perdido,FL by the Rev. Joseph Johnson on 16 April 1874. The marriage certificate indicates that Miss Mary F.Beck was from Perdido, Florida. Escambia County Florida Marriage license issued 4/14/1874. A family record indicates she was from Covington County. Mary Florence Beck was born in Covington County Alabama in 1857. She was most likely living with her brother, A.D.Beck and his family,  in Florida.
There appearsto be a connection between the Beck's and the Grimsley's. John Grimsley married one of the Mathis girls (Salley). Some of the Beck's, the Mathis, and W.W. Lowery were involved in the founding of Enon, Florida. It appears that Mary and William moved to Texas during the dark days of corruption and suppression that was imposed on the Confederate states after the "War between the States", and returned when the reconstruction period began. T hey were involved in the formation of the town of Enon, Florida in 1880 and later migrated to Williams Station (Atmore) where William realized his "American Dream". Mary Beck died at the age of 72.

Notes for ANDREW MARTIN LOWERY:
Andrew Martin Lowery was a Baptish minister. He homsteaded in Canoe , Alabama; and most of his children are buried there. (Check: there may be a mix up of Andrew's and Mildred's death year, i.e., 1952 for Andrew and 1938 for Mildred from tombstone. History of Escambia County Alabam a indicates the reverse, 1938 for Andrew and 1952 for Mildred. Will stick with tombstone data at this time).(also LDS data mixed up?) There are two markers at the Bowman Cemetery that appear to belong to Andrew Martin Lowery's children : one is dated May 18, 1881 (Infant son) , the other just says Infant of M (?) Lowery (rest is unreadable). According to Tom Lowery Sr.; Jessie Forte placed five small head/foot t omestone pairs there.
There is a document that indicates that Andrew Monroe Lowery Jr., son of Kesiah, built and operated a sawmill and was deeply involved with the building (1884) of the Canoe Baptist church.  There is no Andrew Monroe Lowery Jr., it is referring to A.M. Lowery (Andrew Martin Lowery ). Andrew Martin Lowery sold his sawmill to the McKinnon brothers in 1894. Andrew died at the age of 83.

Notes for VICTORIA A. LOWERY:
Victoria A. Lowery died at the age of 76. Her mother, Kesiah Jane, was located in her household in the 1900 census report (listed as mother in law).  It is assumed that she resided with her daugher and her family until death. The 1900 census report also indicates that Vistoria was born in Georgia.  This tracks a report that indicates that Andrew Madison Lowery moved his family to Georgia during the Civil War, and moved them back to Alabama (by oxcart) after the war. It may be a wise move to investigate the Dunaway tree for additional data on Kesiah and Andrew Madison? Victoria and her husband William Dunaway are both buried in the Bowman cemetary. If we can locate where in Georgia Victoria was born, it may aid in the Georgia/Lowery connection.

 ix. JAMES T. LOWERY, b. September 1868, ,Al; m. GEORGIA ELIZABETH RAWLS, January 07, 1892; b. August 1862, ,Al.

Notes for JAMES T. LOWERY:
James T. Lowery was located in the 1880 Escambia county Alabama census, living with his mother, Kesiah. He was also located in the Escambia county Alabama census of 1900, with his family.  He indicated that he had a General Store. It is believed the store was located in Atmore, Alabama. He also
owned a number of pieces of property in the area. The 1880 census indicated that he was 10 years old (born 1870).  The 1900 census indicates that James was born in Sept 1868. As of this point in the investigation, he has not located in a Cemetery in the Canoe or Atmore area. The "History of Escambia
County Alabama" lists him as a member of the Andrew Madison and Kesiah family, and lists some of his children.
There is some confusion about his parents.  The 1880 census report lists his father and mother as being born in Alabama.  The 1900 census report lists his father and mother as being born in Georgia.  This does not agree with the birth data on census reports for these years with where the father and mother were born.  The data on these reports indicate Andrew Madison was born in Alabama and Kesiah was born in Georgia.  (Actually, Andrew Madison was born in Alabama, and Kesiah was born in Florida - her family had moved from Florida, to Georgia , and to Alabama.)
The other confusing data on the 1880 census report was that James was listed as a servant, while the other children were listed as son s and daughters? The 1880 census report also reported James as "BM10". Was James adopted, or was it the usual mixup's found on census reports? The other children's data were in general agreement on the census reports. The 1880 census report indicated that the family lived in Canoe Alabama.  The 1900 census report indicated the family lived in Atmore.
