Burials 1783

 

John Coldrake Labourer was buried
NB. He was found dead on Tuesday the 31st of December, with his head in a stream near the kennell of Rt Gs Dobyns-Yate Esqr: it was supposed that he fell in by accident & from his age (being near 70 years old) & infirmities, was unable to extricate himself & perished by the inclemency of the weather. The Coroner’s Inquest sat on the body & the jury brought in their verdict unanimously, accidental death.

3 January

Anna-Maria daughter of Robert-Gorges Dobyns-Yate Esqr of Bromsberrow-Place died May the 3d of a gradual decline occasioned by an obstruction in the glands & was buried by the Revd John Morton A.M. Rector of Ridmarley

5 May

John Phillips Carpenter from Pendock (descended of Parents who formerly rented Toney-Farm in this Parish) died of a mortification in his leg at the age of 70 years & was buried here

9 June

NB. The Transcript delivered in at the primary Visitation of Bishop Hallifax  to Newnham on 26th June

John Hill Labourer of Norburys Tenement died of an Ague Aged 50 years & was buried here

30 June

Anne widow of Mr John Hill of Donnington & daughter of the late Richard Brooke Gentleman of Russell’s End in this Parish, died at Donnington aged seventy years & was buried here (by her particular desire, near the body of her Grand-father the Revd Richard Eaton Senr formerly Rector)

21 July

John infant son of William Turner of Bromsberrow-Heath and of Margaret his wife was buried by ye Revd J Jenkins

19 August

 

 

Mem: In October an Act took place granting to his Majesty a stamp duty on the Registry of Burials, Marriages & Christenings, where to avoid the expence of New Register Books, the Rector with the concurrence of the Parish took out a licence from the Stamp-Office to write the usual entries in the present Books having privately executed a Bond to account annually, & when called upon, for the moneys received for this tax.

Mary infant daughter of William Baghott Labourer of the Parish of Pendock in the County of Worcester & of Susanna his wife (daughter of Joseph Devereux of this Parish) died at the Poor’s-House & was buried

Mary infant daughter of the late Joseph Baldwin Labourer of this Parish & of Anne his wife (now married to John Devereux of Eastnor) died at the Poor’s-House & was buried

Mem: The Act does not require any stamp duty, where the Party resides in an Alms’ or Charity-House or receives relief from the Parish.

John-Jacob the son of Mr Jacob Vertegins of the Lower-Brookend Farm & of Judith his wife was buried aged two years & two months

Richard Robertson the Blacksmith died of a consumption the 3d of February aged 33 years & was buried

Mr Richard White Tenant of the Sear Farm in Ridmarley, descended from a family connected with this Parish was by his request, buried here by the Revd John Morton, aged 78 years

2 April

John Salcombe Labourer of the Parish of Pauntley was buried here aged about forty years. He died of the small pox (caught in the natural way) at the Dickhouse where he was placed to be under the care of the Overseer

31 May

Mr Henry Taylor from the parish of Much Marcle, Herefordshire was by his own request buried here was buried here (near the body of his late Brother Abel Taylor) aged 70 yrs

Elizabeth, youngest daughter of the late Robert Dobyns-Yate Esq: & of Elizabeth his wife, died of the natural small pox June the 15th & was buried by the Revd John Morton (she was born at Hereford August the first 1764)

Elizabeth Lane Widow of the late William Lane Labourer died of the natural small pox June the 16th aged about 69[?] years & was buried by the Revd John Howe A.B. Scholar of University College, Oxford

Mary Symonds, widow of the late William Symonds, Labourer of Alford’s Tenement was buried, aged ninety one years

3 October

Thomas Sandy the younger (eldest son of Mr Thomas Sandy of this Parish, a Freeholder of the County) died of a lingering disorder for which he was twice admitted into the Gloucester Infirmary without success & was buried, aged 27 years

4 November

Mr Joseph Phillipps formerly Tenant of Tonys’ Farm was brought here from Hartpury & buried in his 84th year. His death was occasioned by a kick from a Mare, which broke his leg.

7 November

Elizabeth widow of John Hill Labourer & daughter of the above-mentioned Mr Joseph Phillipps died of the natural small-pox Novr the 23rd & was buried aged 36 years

Mem: On Decr 9th the Rector settled with the Collector of the Stamp-duties at Glocester for one year’s Register tax ending on October the first.

Anne wife of Mr William Gibbs of Little Lintridge in Dimmock & Tenant of the Fairfields in this Parish died Jany the 24th in her 63d year & was buried here. She was of the family of Brewer of Evesbatch, Herfordshire.

27 January

Mr Benjamin Fisher formerly Tenant of the Upper-Brookend Farm in this Parish, died at Dimmock Feby the 5th in his 84th year & was buried here

8 February

William Barksdale, Carpenter of Bromsberrow Heath (son of the late Clement Barksdale & Sarah his wife now married to Richard Shaile) died of consumption February the 15th & was buried, aged 25 years [This was a family of great credit in this County formerly: Charlton Barksdale great Grandfather to the above William, having the Benefices of Hawling, Brockhampton & Sevenhampton & Clement Barksdale another of his Ancestors being Author of several ingenious treatises & presented by King Charles 2d to the valuable Rectory of Naunton for the loyalty of his principles.)

Mr Thomas Hankins of the Heath & Tenant of the Upper Brookend Farm in this Parish, died of a malignant fever on April 10th aged 62 years & was buried

Mr Thomas Hill of Little Lintridge in Dimmock formerly Tenant of Bromsberrow-Court Farm died April 23d in his 90th year & was buried

Bridget wife of Mr Thos Sandy of Halls died of an inflammation in her bowels aged 51 & was buried by the Revd Jenkin Jenkins, Rector of Donnington & Vicar of Preston

Robert-Gorges Dobyns-Yate Esqr, Lord of the Manor & Patron of this Church, died of a gouty disorder May 26th aged 33 years & was buried by the Revd John Howe

Anne White, eldest daughter of John White Labourer of this Parish, died at Gold-Hill in Eastnor (where she lived in the service of Thos Howe Gent:) of a malignant Fever, aged 22 years & was buried

Samuel Knight Labourer died of an asthmatic complaint aged seventy years & was buried

13 March

Joseph Stone possess’d of a small freehold estate near Bromsberrow-Heath died of a dropsical disorder aged seventy years and was buried

21 April

John Coundley alias Cowley a Protestant Dissenter (a blind man who received relief from the charitable institution founded by Mr Stock in London) was buried in his eighty-sixth year

Mem: The Transcript as deliver’d in at the first triennial Visitation of the Rt Revd Samuel Lord Bishop of Gloucester, at Newnham on Friday the twenty-third.

 

Mem. On Septr 26th the Rector settled with the Collector of the Stamp-duties for one years tax on the register ending October 1st 1785 & on Decr 16th he again settled the last year’s duty ending Octr 1st 1786.

Anne Baldwyn daughter of the late Joseph Baldwyn of Ridmarley, a Parish Apprentice at Russell’s End Farm was buried by the Revd Michael Cowles

Mem. William Woodward having held the office of Parish Clerk near thirty two years & requesting to be reles’d from it, on account of his advanc’d age & infirmities, the Rector, on the third of June, appointed Richard Shaile to succeed him, a a person duly qualified.

 

 

Samuel son of John Smith Tenant of Tonys & the Leasowes Farms died of a decline June the 19th & was buried aged twenty six years

William Phillips a Taylor was drown’d in a pond near Bromsberrow-Heath by accident & was buried by virtue of a warrant from the Coroner aged 76

Elizabeth Taylor Widow from the Sear Farm in Ridmarley was buried here aged eight nine years

Mr William Hill from Little Lintridge Dymock son of Mr Thomas Hill formerly Tenant of Bromsberrow Court Farm was buried by authority from the Coroner aged sixty seven years

Sarah Smith Widow of William Smith was buried aged sixty eight years

Mem: The Transcript was deliver’d in at the Archdeacon’s Visitation at Newnham on August the eleventh.

 

Edward Clements, an infant, illegitimate Son of Sarah Devereux was buried

Annabella-Christiana eldest daughter of the late Robert Gorges Dobyns-Yate & of Annabella-Christiana his Wife died of a pleuritic fever October the second & was buried by the Revd John Howe Rector of Ridmarley

Mr James Gibbs died of a gradual decline at Little Lintridge in Dimmock & was buried aged 24 years. He was the youngest son of Mr William Gibbs deceas’d & rented the Fairfield in this parish.
