Postcards of the Past

Have you ever wondered about the purpose of a postcard?

Have you ever gone on vacation and picked up a postcard or two with pictures on them so you could remember where you've been?
How about when your parents or friends went someplace wonderful and sent you a postcard with a short note on it? Didn't it make you feel really special :)

These days you can find postcards just about everywhere. You can find them with state information on them, vacation sites, birds, fish, goofy cards with with funny sayings, you can even get postcards made from copper, wood and ceramic.
Some people collect postcards, some of us for fun, some of us are serious collectors, but almost everyone saves a postcard for sentimental reasons, to remember some place or someone special.

Most of you visiting this site know about my "Treasure Box". For those of you who don't, I will tell you a little bit about it.

Last summer (2000) while I was on a genealogy/vacation trip, my Mom found an old box of letters, postcards and pictures in the closet. The box had been there for close to 30 years, before that it spent some 40 odd years in my grandmothers attic. In this wonderful box were letters, postcards and pictures that my grandmother, great grandmother AND great, great grandmother had saved. Some date back to 1901! A couple are actually real picture postcards. There is one of my great grandfather's half brother and his wife.

I've spent the last two years going thro the box, sorting, indexing and cross indexing everything in it. So far I've retyped all the letters and indexed them, retyped 99% of the postcards and indexed them and cross indexed both the letters and the postcards. It's been a wonderful journey thro the history of my family with a lot of great clues, leads and a few discoveries:) (I have not even attempted to do anything with the photo's yet, but I will eventually. :) )

This site is set up a little differently than the other two. To save time and skip the annoyance of pages taking forever to load here is what I've done. Each individual link listed below will go to an individual page with an individual postcard and corresponding text. Like the other sites, each will open to it's own page (I personally hate going backwards and forwards, takes to much time :) ) I will eventually have each page of individual postcards linked the other pages, when they apply. I will also eventually have the different parts of this website linked together so it will be easy to get around but this will take me a little time to set up, so please be patient with me. With working full time and two babies, I will have very limited free time to work on this, but I'll go as quick as I can. :)

As with the other pages, if anyone would like to add anything, please just let me know. I'll be more than happy to add information and will put your name and email address on the page if you wish. And please feel free to send me an email if you'd like to add your email address to the mailing list, that way I will be able to let you know when I add something new and won't forget anyone. Just send me an email at
[email protected] subject MAILING LIST, and I'll be more than happy to add your name. :)

*An added note: You will find on here "postcards" that are not exactly "postcards". Some are actually Christmas cards and holdiay greeting cards, but because of the content I'm listing them here as well, for no other reason other than right now I don't have any place else to post them and feel that they are special and should be seen :).

Have a great day! :)
