The Wynkoop-Roosevelt Connection.
The Full Story.

Christopher H. Wynkoop.

One of the most persistent Wynkoop family rumors is that the Wynkoop family is related to President Theodore Roosevelt and his cousin, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Both families are of Dutch descent and both lived in the Albany/Kingston New York area at the same time.

As it turns out that rumor isn't quite as far-fetched as it may sound. The relationship is, however, a bit complex and takes three different family trees to explain it.

The relationship started small and later became a blood bond with one small part of the Roosevelt family, although not the branch from which Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt are descended from.

The Dutch community in upstate New York was a small one, relatively speaking, in the 1600s and early 1700s. Families then had a tendency to intermarry on a regular basis since they shared a common language, Dutch; a common church, the Dutch Reformed; and common customs and traditions. The English were not well liked at the time, having forced their laws and customs on the independent Dutch, so it was only natural that families closed rank for many generations and married within their own culture almost exclusively.

The Wynkoops and Roosevelts, as neighbors in Kingston and fellow church goers, probably had a nodding acquaintance with each other while the Roosevelts lived there. That relationship became closer after the deaths of Cornelis Evertsz. Wijnkoop and his wife, Maria Jans van Langedyck. The initial source of that closeness was the wife of their third son, Garret Wynkoop; Hilletje Fokker, or Helena Eltinge, as she was known in Pennsylvania.

Hilletje Fokker's mother, Jakomijntje Cornelis Slecht, is where the Wynkoop-Roosevelt family connection began.

Jakomijntje married three times; first to Jan Barenztsen Kunst on March 14th, 1665/66, secondly to Gerrit Fokker on October 28th, 1668 and finally to Jan Eltinge. (It is from Jan Eltinge that Garret Wynkoop's wife, Hilletje, took her last name in Pennsylvania. She is mentioned specifically in her stepfather's will, at a time when she was living in Pennsylvania, quite a distance in those days, so I suspect the relationship was a good one.)

Jan Barenztsen Kunst, Jakomijntje's first husband, was married to Jannetje Ariens before Jakomijntje married him. He and Jannetje had a daughter, Hilletje Jansze Kunst, born in Albany, New York. [In volume 2 of the Kingston Court Records, 1668-1675, on pages 643-644 we find this record of March 1667:

Appearing before Matteus Capito, Secretary of the village of Wiltwyck Jan Barents Kunst... of the first part and Volckert Jansen with Henderick Jochemsen, chosen guardians by the said Jan Barents Kunst, father of the minor child--Hilletje Janze, begotten with his deceased wife, Jannetje Ariaensen... of the second part. At issue was the protection of Hilletje's rights as the adults were selling off the child's maternal inheritance.]

After Jannetje Ariens' death, around 1663, and Jan's subsequent remarriage, Hilletje Jansze Kunst became Jakomijntje Cornelis Slecht's stepdaughter. Jan Barentszen Kunst died and Jakomijntje subsequently remarried, this time to Gerrit Fokker, who fathered Garret Wynkoop's future wife, Hilletje Fokker. There were now two different Hilletjes in the family.

The older Hilletje, Hilletje Jansze Kunst, married Nicolaes Roosevelt on December 26th, 1682 in New York City, the future home of Garret Wynkoop's youngest brother, Benjamin Wynkoop.

Nicolaes Roosevelt and Hilletje Jansze Kunst are the common ancestors of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and it is from them that they descend.

Hilletje Jansze Kunst is Hilletje Fokker's step-sister, making the beginning of the Wynkoop-Roosevelt Connection tenuous indeed. It's not until Garret Wynkoop's youngest brother, Benjamin, married into the Van der Heul family of Manhattan that a blood relationship was established, and then only for his children and their descendants.

Benjamin married Femmetje Abrahams Van der Heul on October 21st, 1697 at the Reformed Dutch Church of New York.

Femmetje had six siblings. One of them, Johannes Van der Heul, married Nicolaes Roosevelt and Hilletje Jansze Kunst's daughter, Jannetje Roosevelt, on November 11th, 1699, at the same Reformed Dutch Church where Benjamin and Femmetje had been married two years earlier.

Jannetje and Johannes had six children. Benjamin and Femmetje were only one pair of their numerous Aunts and Uncles. More importantly, however, Benjamin Wynkoop and Jannetje Roosevelt's children were now cousins. That blood relationship continues to this day, in these family lines only.

The relationship between the Roosevelts and the Wynkoops was further reinforced by Nicholas and Heyltie Roosevelt's grandson, (through their son Nicholas), and also named Nicholas, a silversmith in New York City.

According to Kathryn Buhler's book, American Silver 1655-1825 in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, he was apprenticed about 1730, to Benjamin Wynkoop's son, Cornelius, in New York City, before he struck out on his own. After a long and successful career, Nicholas passed away in June of 1769.

The Wynkoop-Roosevelt family relationship was acknowledged in a variety of small ways during Benjamin Wynkoop's lifetime, (1675-1751), and, of course, later by his son, Cornelius:

Martha Gandy Fales' book, Early American Silver, (New York, E. P. Dutton & Co., 1973), on page 135, plate 132, contains a photograph of a large, paneled, silver drinking bowl that Benjamin Wynkoop made for Nicolaes and his wife around 1710.

Roosevelt Drinking Bowl

"These large handled bowls were used as ceremonial bowls and were filled with brandy and raisins on special occasions. The Dutch custom was that each guest had a silver spoon and helped himself to the liquor and then passed the bowl on to the next person. It is this social custom which explains why in America ceremonial spoons were made in New York, for weddings, christenings and funerals, following closely Dutch examples of the mid-seventeenth century." This bowl, which resides at the Smithsonian Institute, would have taken pride of place in Nicolaes and Hilletje Roosevelt's home and would have represented a substantial commission for Benjamin Wynkoop. The front cover of the book is a photograph of another one of Benjamin Wynkoop's pieces made for Nicolaes and Hilletje. This is a beautiful silver tankard engraved with the Roosevelt Arms and initialed for Nicholas and Heyltie Roosevelt. This piece now resides at the Museum of the City of New York.

Below you will find the three family trees mentioned earlier. These will help you follow the Wynkoop-Roosevelt connection. First is the Roosevelt family tree and their descent from Jan Barenztsen Kunst, followed by Jakomijntje Cornelis Slecht's family tree and her relationship to Garret Wynkoop and Hilletje Fokker's family, and then, lastly, the Van der Heul family tree. The story is complicated, but well worth looking into if you have a family mystery you'd like to solve.

Family relationships are not always obvious. What appeared, at first glance, to be just a nodding acquaintance among family members, turns out instead, once in-laws and other relatives are taken into account, to be a full-blooded relationship.

Many more family puzzles can probably be solved in the same fashion, if only the researcher will make the effort to examine all family members and even their in-laws, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Most family stories have at least a grain of truth to them. Only careful research can reveal the exact nature of that truth.
