Burial | a 19 Sep 1795 | Blackfriars Churchyard, Glasgow, Scotland1 |
Note | Other children of note by his 1st wife: James, b 31 Mar 1744, became a merchant in Madeira to which he had gone in 1757 George, b 25 Oct 1748, died in Grenada on 10 Dec 17711
Note | George Murdoch was in business largely interested in trade with Madeira. His name cannot be identified with certainty in any list of shipowners or tobacco importers unless his firm was Murdoch, Hamilton & Co., which is doubtful. At one time, probably early in his career, he was in partnership with Alexander Speirs as Speirs, Murdoch & Co., but in 1754 he seems to have been associated with John Murdoch, who was most probably the provost, the firm being John & George Murdoch; they supplied wine for the Communion services at a cost of £90.13.6d. In 1742, in association with six other partners of whom the most prominent were Richard and Alexander oswald, he founded a new glass bottle works.1
Note | During his various terms of office considerable interest was being taken in improving roads and bridges radiating from the city, and contributions were given on several occasions towards the repair of these. On 6 Jan 1755, George Murdoch, who, with Provost Cochrane, was then in London and endeavoring to get compensation for the damage done in 1745, was authorised to press for an Act of Parliament authorising the erection of a lighthouse on the Little Cumbrae. A site for the new bridge was decided on at the foot of Jamaica Street, and John Adams, mason, was selected to build it. Provost George Murdoch had the honour of laying the foundation stone in 1767, and in this connection took it on himself to form a Grand Lodge of Freemasons in the city so that he as Grand Master might fittingly honour the occasion. For this he was called to aacount by the Grand Lodge of Scotland, and the Glasgow Grand Lodge duly disappeared.1 |
