BACKEN

For a number of years, during the 1870's, the Bredberg family lived on the Svartorps Rote, a large farm with a cottager's holding in Acklinga Parish. Karl Bredberg was listed as the torper or "crofter" of Backen, which means "hill". And there are a lot hills in the area, the broad plane of cultivated fields sloping gently up to thickly-wooded hillsides. In 1998 we visited one likely farm near Acklinga, identified on the map as Backen, and found the pictured farmhouse and barn nestled at the foot of the hill, fog mingling with chimney smoke above the weathered rooftops.

The cottage could date back to the 1800's, despite the appearance of some remodeling over the years; and the old cottager whom I roused from the kitchen by pounding on the back door was possibly a contemporary of Karl Bredberg!!
