ASKELUNDA / HÄLLEN
ASKELUNDA #3, the family farm under the stewardship of Johann Peter Magnusson, was moved sometime during the 1800's -- the buildings physically transported?! -- to a new location a few kilometers west. Here the place is known as Hällen. A modern dairy farm in a 19th century setting, Hällen seems to be prospering thanks to the hard work of our cousin Kjell Oscarson.
Beyond the garden gate is the farmhouse, with Alice Ziemer and Askelunda neighbor Ulrike |
Star-shaped windows are unique to the "new" house |
The old stone barns at Hällen are neat and clean, like everything else |
The "old" farmhouse is unoccupied, but looks ready for company any time |
Kjell shared with us an old photo of Hällen. Note houses, barns, and windmill just as they are today. |
The barn, same as in the old photograph, has an addition now. |
The Öland windmill is a prized symbol of the Askelunda heritage. Note one of Kjell's horses at the stone wall beyond. |
Another neat cottage behind the farmhouse. |
Rediscovery of the family in Öland was an emotional event for all of us, to say nothing of the impact on our genealogy. (The combination of research, happenstance, and determination that led to our reunion makes a tale unto itself.) To meet Kjell and his father Sven, and to enjoy the hospitality in his home at Hällen was the experience of a lifetime. It was our honor to represent all the modern-day descendants of Johann August when we were welcomed back with affection to Askelunda, Öland, the homeland.
Below are some photographs Cousin Kjell Oscarson has sent over the last few years; they depict the new generation of our Swedish relatives as they grow up in lovely Öland in the 21st century:
