Here is a brief beginning to our family history.

My family's line of descent is marked with a **.

The original Brush ancestors in America were Thomas and Richard Brush of Huntington, Long Island, New York.  It is believed that they were brothers or cousins, but so far no proof of that has been found.  Our Brush line goes back to Richard and his wife, Joanna (Sammis) Brush, in New York in the early 1700s.  Our line then descends through:

  • John and Constant Brush
  • Joshua Brush
  • Peter Brush
  • Thomas and Sarah Ann Brush - the ones who moved from New York to Ohio, settling in Shelby County, Ohio.

Thomas BRUSH was born about 1803 in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, USA.  He was married to Sarah Ann by 1825.  Sarah Ann was born in 1809 in New York, USA.  Thomas appeared on the census in 1830 in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, USA.    Somewhere between 1830 and 1850 they moved to Shelby County, Ohio.  The family appeared on the census in 1850 in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  Thomas died between 1851 and 1860 in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  He was buried in Beechwood Cemetery, Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  Sarah appeared as a widow on the census in 1860 in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA (Household #499) and in 1870 (Household #66).  She died after 1880 when she appeared on the census in the household of her son George in Lockington, Shelby County, Ohio.  Thomas and Sarah had the following children:

  1. William A BRUSH was born in 1825 in New York, USA.  He was married first to Harriet.  He was married second to Margaret.
  2. **Nathaniel "Bailey" BRUSH. (see below)
  3. Thomas BRUSH was born in 1830 in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, USA.  Thomas was a boatman and a hired hand.  He was married to Saphronia about 1858.  Saphronia was born about 1836 in Ohio, USA.  His family appeared on the census in 1860 in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  In 1870, they were in Orange Township.  Thomas cannot be found in 1880, so is presumed deceased.  Saphronia died on 15 April 1914 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio, USA.  Thomas and Saphronia’s children include George N BRUSH, Sarah BRUSH, James Lewis BRUSH, John William BRUSH and Mary BRUSH.
  4. Abraham BRUSH was born in May 1834 in New York, USA.  He was married to Mary Jane about 1856.  They appeared on the census in 1860 in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  (Household #500)  Abraham and Mary had one known child - Thomas F BRUSH.
  5. Ephraim BRUSH was born in 1836 in Ohio, USA.
  6. Nancy Ellen BRUSH was born in 1839 in Ohio, USA.
  7. George N BRUSH was born in November 1842 in Ohio, USA.  He was married to Charlotte  in 1866.  He died on 15 April 1925.  Nothing more is currently known about them.
  8. Margaret A BRUSH was born in 1847 in Ohio, USA.
  9. Malinda J BRUSH was born in 1851 in Ohio, USA.

**Nathaniel "Bailey" BRUSH was born in January 1827 in Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, USA.  On 13 October 1852, he was married to Mary Jane WILSON in Shelby County, Ohio, USA.  Mary Jane WILSON was born about 1835.  The family appeared on the census in Washington Township, Shelby County, Ohio, USA in:
