Here is a brief beginning to our family history.

My family's line of descent is marked with a **.

The Dinsmore family comes from Scotland.  The name over the years has been recorded as Dunsmoor, Dunmore, Dunsmore, Densmore, Densmoor, Dinsmoor, and more commonly Dinsmorr and Dinsmore.  The first known ancestor of our line was Laird John Dinsmoor born somewhere around 1600.  Our line then continues through John, Robert, and Samuel before we begin with our American ancestry:

William DINSMORE Sr was born about 1785/1786 in Ballywattik, Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland, the son of Samuel Dinsmore and Mary Brewster (daughter of Andrew Brewster).  Currently no information is known about his wife.  On coming to America with his wife and four children, he lived for a short time in Cincinnati.  In 1850 William is found living with his daughter and son-in-law, Benjamin Crawford, in Ward 8, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, Household #1630.  William then came to Putnam county  and cleared up a farm of ninety acres in Sugar Creek Township.  At that time there was only a wagon track cut out along Hog Creek north from Lima, and it was very crooked, running to each settler's house regardless of the course.  In 1860 he is found living with his son William and family in Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, Household #390.  One source states that William died in Piqua, Ohio.  William’s known children include:

  1. Elizabeth DINSMORE was born in 1821 in Ireland.  She was married to Benjamin CRAWFORD on 30 January 1838 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.  Benjamin CRAWFORD was born in 1818 in Ohio, USA.  Elizabeth died in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.  Benjamin died on 14 October 1898 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  He was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  They appeared in the 1850 census at Ward 8, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, USA, Household #1630.  Elizabeth and Benjamin’s children were Andrew CRAWFORD, Mary E CRAWFORD, Benjamin CRAWFORD Jr, Sarah J CRAWFORD and Florence CRAWFORD.
  2. **William S DINSMORE Jr (see below)

**William S DINSMORE Jr was born on 15 July 1822 in Ballywattik, Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland.  He was married first to Jane H NEEVE or NEAVE (daughter of James NEAVE and Elizabeth HUNTER) about 1848 in Hamilton County, Ohio, USA.  Jane H NEAVE was born on 14 November 1829 in Saint Vigeans, Angus, Scotland. They appeared on the US census in:

  • 1850 Ward 7, Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, Household #574
  • 1860 Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, Household #390
  • 1870 Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, Household #42
  • 1880 Sugar Creek Township, Putnam County, Ohio, Household #75

William was a farmer until 1893, when he retired and moved in with his son William S. Dinsmore III.  Jane died on 25 August 1886 in Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  She was buried in Ottawa River Cemetery, Rimer, Putnam County, Ohio, USA.  Putnam County history says that they had twelve children, but that only eight lived to maturity.  Known children are:
