July 16, 1833 in Thiene, Kingdom of Hannover, Germany, baptized in the nearby village of Alfhausen at St. Johan's Catholic Church on July 17, 1833, son of Herman Heinrich Wischer & Maria Gerdrat Wessel. He immigrated to the US with his father and step-mother Catherine Kroeger arriving December 29, 1843 on board the ship Agnes. The family settled in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH where his father died in November 1850 & stepmother in November 1852. He married his first wife, Caroline Staggenborg at St. Philomena Church, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH on August 31, 1852. In the mid 1850's the family moved from Cincinnati across the river to Covington KY. They had seven (7) children, of which two (2), George & John, survived to become adults. Caroline died November 10, 1865. Henry married 2nd to Bernadette Dunhoft at St. Joseph's Church in Covington, Kenton Co., Ky on April 6, 1866. Henry & Bernadette had nine (9) children, of which three (3) survived to become adults, William, Josephine & Rose. Bernadette died February 27, 1895 & is buried at Mother of God Cemetery, Henry died July 19, 1899 & is also buried at Mother of God Cemetery. H. Henry kept a notebook listing both of his marriages, as well as both of their deaths and the birth and deaths of each of his children. Although his notebook does not name each child, I was able to go through the baptismal & death registers for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Covington KY and was then able to add names to some of the children. A few of the children whom died the day they were born apparently were not baptized so no other record exists. |
Paper found with Henry's notebook from the pastor at St. Johann's
in Alfhausen
dated just prior to his first marriage.
