Ellen Thomas, my great, great grandmother, was born in 1856 to Owen Thomas (a master mariner) and Margaret Williams.

Owen Thomas was the son of  Owen Thomas (born in 1796 in Amwlch Port) and Eleanor Hughes (born about 1804 in Caernarvonshire, Wales).
They were married about 1820 and had eight children, all born in Amwlch:

• Catherine 1821. Married in 1859 at the age of 38 to William Griffiths a sailor from Amwlch aged 36.

• John 1827
• Elizabeth 1828
• Mary 1830
• Owen 1832
• William 1834
• Ellen 1838.

There is a noticeable gap betewwn 1822 and 1827 so there may have been other children who did not survive infancy.

In the 1851 census of Wales Catherine aged 30 is keepng house for her father who was, by then, a widower aged 55.  Son John aged 24 was a ship master; Elizabeth aged 22 was a shop server; William aged 17 was a mariner; Ellen aged 13 was a schoolgirl.
